Chapter 14
The doctor arrived after the nurse drove Edward out of the room.
Macie only bit her bottom lip. Her tears were overflowing from the intense pain..
The ward fell silent once again, except for the sound of her sobs. The other patients looked at her with sympathy for this
unfortunate woman.
“Domestic violence is against the law. I’m calling the police right now.” The nurse, unable to stand it any longer, took out her
phone.
Edward snapped back to his senses and immediately snatched the phone away.
“I didn’t do it! Domestic violence? What are you talking about? If you keep making things up, I’ll make sure you lose your job!” he
threatened.
“The patient has a fractured coccyx. Were you not the one who did this?” The nurse looked at him questioningly.
A fractured coccyx…
Edward froze again and looked at the injured area.
The first time, he had thrown her to the ground. The second time, he had pushed her down hard.
Could it be…
Seeing that he had fallen silent, the nurse picked up her phone again and spat, “You look like a decent person, but you’re just a
domestic abuser.”
However, Nathan arrived just in time before she could make the call. He pulled the nurse aside and smiled apologetically.
Edward stood completely frozen in place. All he could hear was Macie’s painful sobs.
He remained motionless for as long as the doctor examined and treated her. When the doctor finally stepped out, Edward grabbed
his arm and began to say hoarsely, “Doctor..”
“The patient is in stable condition,” the doctor replied, his expression cold.
“Will she need surgery?” Edward asked again.
“Surgery isn’t recommended for a fractured coccyx. She’ll need hospitalization and treatment,” the doctor answered.
Edward let out a breath of relief and slowly released his grip..
“Non–essential personnel should stay away from the ward. Next time, we’ll call the police immediately,” the doctor warned
before leaving.
Edward swallowed the words he wanted to argue and clenched his hands. He looked down without saying a single word.

Chapter
After standing still for several seconds, he quietly walked into the ward.
Macie was still lying on her stomach, the back of her hospital gown lifted slightly to reveal the medicated area.
He then noticed her feet. They were red and swollen, and the blisters were already broken.
When he looked at her face, he saw that her eyes were closed. Her hands were clutching the pillow, clearly unwilling to acknowledge his presence.
“Why didn’t you tell me that you were hospitalized?” Edward asked.
Macie remained silent.

“You came the night before last? Did you go home last night? Why didn’t you answer my calls this morning?” Edward’s tone had softened considerably.
Still, Macie pretended not to hear him.
After waiting for over ten seconds, Edward’s patience snapped, and his anger flared up again. Gritting his teeth, he demanded,
“It’s just a hospital stay. You don’t even need surgery. Why are you being like this?”
Seeing that Edward wouldn’t give up, and considering they were in a hospital ward, Macie finally opened her eyes. She glared at
him and spoke slowly, emphasizing each word.
“Do you actually care whether I go home or not? If not, why are you pretending to be concerned?
“Oh, I forgot. You’re only angry because no one is there to serve you. But unfortunately for you, I’ll be in the hospital for a week. So, please hire a temporary caretaker in the meantime.”
Edward’s face darkened further at her three consecutive retorts.
“I’m trying to have a proper conversation with you. Do you have to act like you’re ready for battle?”
“Am I not having a proper conversation with you?” Macie sneered. “Tell me, which part of what I said was false?”
“You-“Edward started to argue, but Macie cut him off immediately.
“Are you going to argue with me? If you argue, that means you care about me. It also means that you’re not just contacting me
because you need someone to take care of you.
Edward’s expression remained grim, but he had no guilt about the latter accusation. “Did I ever say that I needed you to look after
me? You’re making this up.”
“Oh? Who was the one who forced me to cook for you and your ex–girlfriend while I was already unwell the night before last?”
Macie’s voice was icy. “And who was it that pushed me to the ground, worsening my injuries and fracturing my tailbone?
“Sharon deliberately dropped the food tray, spilling the boiling grease and scalding the top of my foot. The blisters all burst, yet
you still accused me of trying to murder her.”

A simple recounting of the events was enough.
The other patients in the hospital ward gasped audibly.

They wondered what sort of scumbag Edward was. It was bad enough that he teamed up with his ex–girlfriend to torment his wife! If this weren’t a society governed by law, he might as well have been plotting to kill her!
