Chapter 5
“Jean wants a divorce? Is she out of her mind? She wouldn’t last five minutes without me,” Elias muttered, his eyes locked on my
signature in disbelief.
The ink had soaked through the paper, showing how hard I’d pressed.
“Maybe she’s asking for a divorce because she’s jealous of how much I’ve been looking after Laura. How petty. Does she seriously
think she’s still the top dog? She’s nothing but a cripple now. No guy would ever want her, and she still dares to ask for a divorce.”
The more Elias thought about it, the angrier he got. He slammed the divorce agreement onto the floor and kept calling me.
Yet, after a dozen calls with no answer, something finally felt off. It was like a lightbulb went off in his head. He rushed to his
study to check the surveillance footage.
Ever since my accident, I’d been having nightmares and sometimes hurt myself in a panic. Afraid I might get hurt, Elias had set
up a bunch of surveillance cameras around the house.
At first, he’d watch the footage nonstop, rushing home at the first sign of trouble. However, after a while, he barely checked it.
There were times I’d fall and have to drag myself across the floor, and he never knew.
As Elias watched the footage again, he realized I returned home early that night when the rain was coming down hard and
overheard his conversation with Melvin.
He froze as if all the blood had drained from his body. A deep wave of helplessness hit him, feeling like he had lost control of
everything.
“How did this happen? How did she find out? She’s never going to forgive me. Damn it! She actually wants a divorce. How could
she do this to me?” Elias‘ voice shook with panic like never before.
After what felt like forever, he called Melvin. They were, after all, in this together–the ones responsible for putting me in this
condition.
“Jean knows everything,” Elias confessed.
“Knows what?” Melvin asked, sounding clueless.
Elias couldn’t keep it in anymore, his voice shaky. “Jean… f–found out we’re the reason she ended up in a wheelchair…”
