“Hurry up, we’ll be late.”
“You still haven’t told me who else is performing today.”
As their conversation trailed off, Grayson remained where he stood, watching her disappear into the distance.
For a moment, he had wanted to call out to her, to fight for one last chance.
But then he saw the light in her eyes–the quiet joy, the anticipation.
It was a look he had once been so familiar with.
Back when they were together, she had often gazed at him with that same expression. But now, it had been nearly two months
since he last saw it.
Thinking back to the days before her staged death, he realized something.
Back then, there had been no light in her eyes at all. Only stillness, like a body of water too stagnant to ripple.
But now, standing there, he understood.
All that remained between them was pain.
He no longer had the right to ask for forgiveness.
That afternoon, he booked a flight home.
Before leaving, he borrowed a pen and paper from a passerby and wrote down a single sentence.
He placed the note where she would see it, then took one last look at the place where she would live out the rest of her days.
Then he turned and left.
A gust of wind picked up the paper, sending it drifting into the air.
The message was short:
Violet, please allow me to call you this one last time. I only wanted to say–I’m sorry. And finally, I wish you a life filled with happiness.
