Sam looked puzzled. “That’s your family matter. How would I know? All I know is that your daughter had a successful operation
on the 8th of last month. The whole company was relieved. We thought the little princess would come to visit once she got
better.”
Christian frowned. “When did my daughter have surgery? How come I didn’t know?” He paused as if something had just clicked.
“Sam, the one who had surgery on the 8th wasn’t my daughter.”
Sam’s jaw dropped. “What do you mean…”
Christian hesitated, then muttered, “That was my friend’s daughter.”
Sam covered his mouth in surprise. “But didn’t you personally call the hospital to ensure she got the heart first? Wasn’t it for
your own daughter?”
Christian replied matter–of–factly, “My friend’s daughter was in worse condition, so I gave it to her first.”
Sam hesitated. “But that was your own daughter…” He sighed. “I don’t know where she went after getting discharged, but I can ask the hospital for you.”
Christian shook his head. “I’ll go myself.”
For the first time, his expression darkened. Maybe he realized how impossible his explanation sounded. He had taken his own daughter’s heart and given it to his mistress’s child. Even wild animals protected their young, but Christian had abandoned his. His wife and daughter had been left to suffer alone in the hospital while he played the perfect father to another girl.
Christian left for the hospital.
Back in the secretary’s office, Sam wasted no time gossiping with his colleagues. “You won’t believe what I just heard! Remember when Mr. Gordon gave us all bonuses? We thought it was because his daughter’s surgery was a success.”
A coworker chimed in, “Wasn’t that the case? I heard Mr. Gordon was elated outside the operating room!”
Sam leaned in, lowering his voice. “That girl wasn’t his daughter. He said she was his friend’s child!”
The room fell silent.

“That can’t be right,” someone finally said. “Mr. Gordon personally made the hospital give her the heart! His own daughter had a heart condition too. How could he save his friend’s child and let his own daughter fend for herself?”
Another whispered, “What kind of father does that?”
