Christian left in a daze. Every piece of evidence confirmed that Minnie and I were dead, but he refused to accept it. He pulled every
string he could and spent an absurd amount of money investigating, yet the answer remained the same.
“How is this possible?” he muttered. “It’s only been half a month. How could they both be gone?”
Desperation led him back to the hospital. “Who diagnosed Rachel’s leukemia? Get the h*ll out here, you quack!” Christian
disregarded his shame. His voice echoed through the hall as he ignored the stares of startled patients and staff.
The hospital director was alerted and quickly pulled him into a private room.
“Mr. Gordon,” the director began, his tone measured. “Aren’t you aware? On the 8th of last month, the little girl you were with
had a successful operation. You even sent gifts to the entire hospital staff in celebration. But there was another child—Minnie.
Both needed a heart transplant, but you instructed us to prioritize Clara.
“Have you forgotten? During the surgery, Minnie suffered a heart attack and passed away. Ms. Simmons–Rachel–collapsed on
the spot, vomiting blood. It was then that we discovered she had terminal leukemia. She left the hospital with her daughter’s
ashes. That was the last we saw of her.”
The director pulled up surveillance footage, leaving Christian no room for denial.
Minnie was dead.
Rachel was gone.
His mind reeled as he recognized a familiar figure in the footage–Mina, standing outside the ward, smirking. That she was
shouting was apparent even without audio.
Christian bolted out of the hospital, racing home.
When he threw open the door, he found Clara sitting on the living room floor, her back to him. She was playing with something,
