Mark forced a smile, not wanting to lose in front of Andy.
“Andy, you don’t really know Claire, do you? She doesn’t like beef jerky at all!”
Mark noticed the beef jerky Andy had packed for me for breakfast.
“Mark, are you stupid or something?”
Andy almost laughed at Mark’s words.
The truth was, it was Mark who never really understood me. When two people were in love, the one who loved more tended to
adjust to the other’s preferences.
I used to love snacking on things like beef jerky and pickled eggs. However, Mark felt disgusted whenever I ate them.
To please him, I stopped eating those snacks that I had loved since I was a child.
He never considered my preferences; he would not know what I liked.
Mark realized he had said something wrong when he saw my thoughtful expression. He tried to apologize, but I walked away
without saying anything.
I completely ignored Mark during our honeymoon in Hawaii. He tried to catch my attention, but he turned out to be a topic for
gossip among the hotel guests.
“Did that peacock bother you today, Mrs. Selton?”
The receptionist teased me when she saw me.
I smiled and checked out of the hotel.
When we got home, I worked as Andy’s executive assistant at his company. The benefit of working at the same company as your
spouse was that I knew his every move. Even when he had to go out for work, he would always report to me.
