There was no mistaking that Evelyn’s comment had caught Alexander completely off guard.
The alpha quickly adjusted his wheelchair, turning himself back around until he was facing her directly. His brows were raised while he kept his gaze firmly locked on her. He tried to keep his expression as natural as possible as he spoke.
“Why would you think something like that?” he asked. “What plans are you referring to?”
Evelyn let out a tired sigh. She shook her head and lightly shrugged with a look of indifference.
“I don’t know,” she confessed. “I just feel like ever since I came here I’ve been nothing but an inconvenience to
you.
Alexander sagged back in his seat, carefully contemplating her words. Right as he was about to say something, Evelyn swiftly cut him off.
“I know that my being here isn’t exactly a welcoming situation. But I didn’t mean to cause any problems for you, she said, insistently.
His brews drew together in questions once more.
“What makes you think that you’ve caused me problems?”
“Because the moment I stepped into this house, you have been putting me through various trials,” Evelyn responded harshly.
Alexander was shocked to find that his heart rate had picked up. Even more so, he was surprised that she managed to piece that truth together so quickly. Again, he placed his features into a state of easy resolve.
“I don’t ”
“Stop,” she hissed. “Do not try to deny it. I understood what was going on from the very beginning. The intense questioning, the bath, and then the confrontation with your family, just now, were all tests for me. Not to mention the gun that was placed in my back, was a clear enough indicator of your suspicions.
Alexander generally wasn‘ sure whether to be impressed or even more concerned about how well Evelyn was able to piece it all together.
He continued to study her expression. From what he could gather, she appeared both upset and greatly exhausted. There was a short painful jab that hit him in the chest. Was it guilt?
“I guess what I’m getting at here….Should I just back up my bag and leave?” she asked.
Another strange jab of pain struck Alexander in his chest.
In the grand scheme of things, perhaps it would be a wise choice to send her away. It would certainly cancel out any further suspicions he had. However, the Alpha took a long moment to really think about it. While his logic was trying to make him see sense, he wasn’t capable of ignoring the feeling that was growing within him.
He doesn’t really want her to leave.
Instead of acting on her offer, he placed the decision in her hands. “Do you want to leave?” he questioned slowly.
Evelyn shook her head. “No. But if you’re concerned that I’m going to interfere too much in your life and your plans, then I promise to keep myself occupied with something else.”

The guilt must have still been eating away at him. Alexander felt oddly obligated to case Evelyn’s concerns. He spoke softly.
“No matter what, you and I are married. And even if there are no feelings between us now or in the future, I’m still hoping that you’re willing to play your part as Luna to this pack.” He went on. “For instance, one thing I know you could help with is sharing some of the responsiblities with my Grandmother. If not you, then Caroline will surely try and step in and take control.”
Evelyn gave a firm nod. “I will try my best to fulfill my role
Alexander felt like there was much more the two of them needed to discuss; however, due to Nina’s untimely arrival, the opportunity was cut short.
“Ah, Evelyn. Claire has just sent over the first batch of clothes for you to try on,” she informed us.
“So soon?”
Normally, most women would have been elated with the thought of getting a new wardrobe.
Yes, but Evelyn isn’t like most women.
Alexander returned to his room, giving her the chance for her and Nina to go through her new clothes. He was soon joined by Oliver who wore his usual amused smirk.
“I remember you said you weren’t interested in this woman,” he remarked.
Alexander replied dryly, “I’m not interested. But Wendy is sick now. And if Evelyn doesn’t have any problems, she can help Grandma Wendy from here on out.
“I see.”
Η
“And keeping her around is also a way to soothe the Alpha King, who keeps trying to find me a mate,” he added.
Oliver’s knowing look softened. “Fair enough.”
[Evelyn’s POV]
“Oh, Evelyn. You look beautiful,” Nina said with a bright smile.
I stood in front of the floor–length mirror the staff had brought out, evaluating myself in my new formal attire. I was neither thrilled nor disappointed by any of it. It just wasn’t the type of clothing that I would have ever chosen for myself.
I didn’t feel like myself and the thought of having to go through all the other pieces made my skin itch with irritation.
“How about we try on some of the others now?”
Nope. I had had enough.
After just trying on one outfit, I was already beginning to lose my patience. My fingers started undoing the buttons on the side of the dress. I was eager to get back in my normal clothes.
“I don’t think so,” I said blatantly. “I’m sure that if this one fits, then the rest of them should as
I could tell that Nina was disappointed in my lack of enthusiasm toward my new clothes. I didn’t want to come off
as ungrateful, but my priorities as well as my mind were really placed elsewhere at the moment.
As soon as I changed back into my clothes, I left the living room to head back to my room. On my way back, my mind kept returning to my earlier conversation with Alexander.

I knew I couldn’t leave. With Edward still recovering back home, my place was here with Alexander whether I wanted to be or not. Although, I appreciated the way he spoke to me, regarding the matter. He hadn’t demanded that I leave but instead asked if I wanted to.
Who knows? Maybe I’ve earned some level of trust from him.

Right as I made it to my door, I stopped short. The realization suddenly hit me like a brick wall that tonight I was technically meant to sleep with Alexander. Good God. After the day we both had, I wasn’t sure if either of us was even up for such an obligation.
But I made a promise to both him and myself that I was going to make this marriage work. Without much thought, I turned toward Alexander’s room, turned the knob and walked right in.
Due to my rising nerves, I accidentally forget to knock. My heart jumped into my throat when I saw Alexander, who had already put on his pajamas, leaning against the bed in a standing position.
He looked as though he was just getting ready to remove his mask from his face but stopped to stare at me questioningly.
“Oh my God…
