Chapter Nine
Chapter Nine
Vanessa’s POV
Damien and Celeste’s divorce was the happiest day of my life. Finally, Damien was mine after years of pretending to be Celeste’s friend and sucking up to their little spawn.
I hummed happily as I walked down a row of designer bags bathed in golden light.
“I’ll take this one.”
I pointed to a one of a kind clutch and the sales assistant ran off to package it for me. She left it with the numerous other items I’d chosen.
“Would you be interested in browsing our scarf collection? She asked.
“Maybe next time. I have a nail appointment now. Have these delivered to my address.” I said as I left the store.
My new life came with many perks, but Damien’s credit card was by far my favourite.
I now lived with one of the most successful businessmen in the jewellery industry. Working didn’t suit my new status. I resigned from the company as soon as the divorce was finalised.
I spent my days shopping and pampering myself. It would have been bliss if Damien hadn’t started pulling away.
He used to be so attentive. Seeing to my every need and giving in to my every whim. I could play with him like putty.
But since the divorce, he had become distant.
We used to have the most thrilling sex life. It would take the littlest coaxing to turn him into an insatiable beast. These days, he wasn’t nearly as passionate about me.
That’s why I bought a few pieces of lingerie at the mall today. I was nothing if not persistent.
With freshly done nails, I drove myself home. I was excited to dress up in something I knew Damien could not resist.
Carrying only a few of today’s purchases, I walked through the front door.
“Vanessa.”
My heart jumped when I saw Damien standing in the hallway with his arms folded over his chest. His handsome face was stony.
He was clearly in a bad mood. I gave him a disarming smile as I came through the door.
“Hi, babe. How was your day?” I asked cheerily and kept walking.
He didn’t return my smile.
“Aren’t you forgetting something?”
My mind drew a blank. Whatever it was, I could tell it was bad because the vein in his forehead wa obbing.
“How could I forget?”
I put down my bags and pressed our bodies together, giving him a dizzying kiss. He held me closer and relief
washed over me. Crisis averted.

I celebrated too quickly.
Damien pushed me away and frowned.
“How could you completely forget to fetch Bonnie from school?”
My stomach dropped as I realised how badly I screwed up. Damien had a special place in his heart for his daughter that I hadn’t been able to replace.
It was not for lack of trying.
“She would still be there if they hadn’t called me to pick her up. How could you be so irresponsible?”
The criticism stung. I never signed up to be a mother, but I was stuck caring for that child.
“Babe, I’m so sorry. I had an appointment that ran late. I rushed to the school, but you had already fetched her.” I said with forced sincerity.
“Come on Vanessa. Do you really expect me to believe that?
“Damien, it was completely out of my hands. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
My voice trembled as I tried to pull on his heartstrings.
‘Your only job is to take care of Bonnie. Start doing it or I’ll need to rethink this relationship.” He said before storming off.
I stood there in shock. Damien was getting harder to pacify as the days went on. It was time to bring in the big guns.
Two hours later, the dinner table was laden with delectable food. I had invited my mother over to cook for us to get back into Damien’s good graces.
It was a failure.
We ate in an uncomfortable silence. Any attempt I made at a conversation quickly fizzled out. Damien was polite,
but reserved.
Eventually I gave up. I lost my appetite and pushed the food around on my plate. My mother had made a feast, but we hardly ate.
After dinner, Damien said he needed to work and went to his study. I left my mother to clear the table as I gave Bonnie a bath. It was the most tiresome part of my day.
I smiled and tickled her and listened to her babble as I did my best to get it over with. Just as I was pulling on her pyjamas, my mother called from downstairs.
“Vanessa, I’m done.”
I shouted toward the door. “Coming!”
“Bonnie, Auntie Vanessa has to go let Granny out. Finish dressing, okay?”
She whined. “But I wanna play with you!”
I pulled out a jar of candy I kept out of reach in her room.
“Get dressed and then I’ll let you have these candies.”
She nodded with her eyes glued to the jar on her nightstand.

I smirked. Kids were so simple. If only Damien would fall for a honey trap just as easily.
I went downstairs and walked my mother out.
“Thanks for coming.”
“Things are not looking good with Damien.” She said in a hushed whisper.
“Don’t you think I know that?” I snapped.
My mother shook her head. “You need to do something or you’re going to lose him.”
“Like what?” I asked, eager for an answer.
She got into her cab. “There’s a foolproof way to tie him down.”
“But how, mom?”
She chuckled dryly. “It’s not rocket science, dear.”
I closed the cab door and waved goodbye as an idea formed in my mind.
That night, I made myself up in a low–cut nightgown and the perfume I knew Damien loved. I opened the nightstand and quietly poked holes in the condoms.
I needed to fall pregnant.
If I had a child with Damien, he wouldn’t be so quick to threaten our relationship. A baby could knock Bonnie off her pedestal.
It was the perfect plan.
Damien laid on the bed going through his phone. I climbed on beside him and made sure my cleavage was in perfect view before I slid my hand up his thigh. He glanced up from the screen.
“I really missed you today, Damien.” I said sweetly as my fingers trailed up his abs. “I want to feel close to you.”
“Not now Vanessa. I’m not in the mood.”
“But, baby,” I undid his top button, “I want to show you how much I appreciate you.‘
He flung my hand back at me like it was something distasteful.
“For fuck’s sakes, I said I’m not in the mood.”
