Nina’s caption read, “With the family I love the most.”
My friend was absolutely livid at her shameless stunt. She didn’t just rant to me in private; she had even left a pointed comment
under Nina’s post.
“Looks like your brother–in–law is taking great care of you while your sister is away!”
I replied to her first, calming her down before moving on to the other messages. Without exception, every single one blamed me
for my friend’s comment.
I apologized to everyone, and just as I was about to put my phone down, Adrian called.
“Sadie, what the hell? Why haven’t you been reachable? Do you have any idea how worried everyone was these past few days?”
Right after he finished speaking, I heard Nina’s clear, ringing laugh.
“Mom, Dad, Brandon, come and look at this carousel! It’s so pretty!”
It seemed like they were at an amusement park.
I asked plainly, “Worried, you say?”
When Adrian finally spoke again, he sounded embarrassed. “Well, we couldn’t get a hold of you. If you had been here, you could have joined us. It’s all your friend’s fault. You know how sensitive Nina is. She cried for a long time after seeing that comment. We
had to bring her out to cheer her up.”
“I already apologized.”

Adrian fell silent again at that, not knowing what to say.

After a while, he finally muttered, “That’s good to know. You’ve finally learned to keep your temper in check.”
The next second, Brandon snatched Adrian’s phone away. His deep voice came through, tinged with anger. “Sadie, were you the one who told your friend to leave that comment? Why do you have such filthy thoughts? I’ve told you countless times. Mina is your sister. I’m just taking care of her for you
“Isn’t that what your entire family does? I know you feel like everyone loves Nina and not you. That’s why you’re jealous of her But that’s no fault of hers. You should really reflect on why you’re so unlikable!”
His reckless comment made me tighten my grip on my phone ever so slightly. When I had first gotten together with Brandon, I had told him a few things about my family.
Back then, he had held me in his arms and promised he would always take my side. Now, he was telling me to reflect on myself
But I didn’t feel sad. Just before I had left home, I had already learned the truth from my parents–I had never been the person
Brandon liked. He had just been putting on an act.
Once he finished his performance, he would be able to stay by his true love’s side, protecting and cherishing her forever.
What I believed to be fate had been nothing more than a play they had put together.
There were moments when I just wanted to ask them why. But there was no point to it. They just didn’t love me. There was no
reason why.
On the other end of the line, I heard Brandon’s flustered apologies. It seemed like he realized he had spoken out of line.
But it didn’t matter. I didn’t care anymore.
I glanced at the flight details my classmates sent me and said softly, “Brandon, let’s break up.”
I was done being their pawn.
