Chapter 13
At that moment, I genuinely felt sorry for Jessica.
“But I do mind that you lived with Cameron,” I quipped, cutting her off mid–sentence.
With that, I ended the call.
Jessica called back immediately, but I didn’t pick up right away. It was only when she called for the twenty–third time that I answered.
The moment I picked up, I snapped, “Jessica, just because I’m not yelling doesn’t mean I don’t have a temper. Stop testing my limits.”
Jessica let out a scoff. “Sebastian, I know you too well. You could never like anyone else but me.”
“We’ll see how things go. If Selena finds out we lived together for five years, how do you think she’ll react?” she added, her voice dripping with amusement.
“Jessica, what are you trying to do?” I demanded.
She chuckled again. “Relax, I’m not going to spill everything right now. I just want you to face your own heart.”
She ended the call before I could respond.
I held the phone tightly, trying to calm my racing thoughts. When I finally relaxed, I couldn’t help but find the situation almost laughable.
I used to think of Jessica as my everything. She had been at the center of my world, and I took care of her every need. But the moment I let go, she couldn’t bear it.
After attending the gathering with Selena, it was clear to everyone that we were officially a couple. As my friends quickly caught on, word spread fast that I was in a relationship.
Only one person knew the full extent of my past with Jessica–my best friend, Samuel Lloyd.
Sebastian Grant, don’t be an idiot! I heard Jessica is the one who introduced Selena to you. Who knows if they’re in this together? They’re probably scheming behind your back. Haven’t you suffered enough for five years?”
He shook his head, almost laughing in disbelief. “It’s good that you’re trying to start fresh, but there are so many women out there. Why would you go for Jessica’s best friend?
“Birds of a feather flock together. You better watch out. Once her friend gets what she wants from you, she’ll throw you away like you’re nothing. Trust me, I know women like Jessica. Her best friend can’t be any better.”
I gave him a pat on the shoulder, signaling him to calm down.
“You haven’t spent much time with Lena. She’s nothing like Jessica. Also, she doesn’t even know about my past with Jessica. Besides, we’re just dating. We’re not jumping Into marriage. Stop overthinking.”
“Alright, fine.” Samuel sighed, clearly not convinced. “But you’re making a mistake, I can already tell. You’re never going to be free of Jessica.
“I heard she recently broke up with that ‘perfect guy‘ of hers. You know, the one she always talked about? She’ll definitely come running back to you. Now that you’re with her best friend, you better hold on tight. Don’t let Jessica talk you into giving her another chance, like last time.”
I rolled my eyes. “Do you really think I’m that spineless?”

Samuel made a face. “After the last five years? Yeah, pretty much. I’ve seen you act like a doormat too many times
to count.”
His words stung, but I couldn’t blame him.
Samuel was the only one who had witnessed everything in the years I spent with Jessica. He used to say I was nothing more than her shadow–always there when she needed me, but pushed away when I wasn’t.
His words were harsh, especially when he said I wasn’t even good enough to be a backup option for Jessica. My title as her boyfriend was an empty one that no one could know about. I was simply a placeholder in her life.
This time, I was finally going to move on from Jessica.
But then, I remembered–from the time we were fifteen to thirty, our lives had been intertwined for so long. There were too many memories and ties between us.
