Feigning irritation, I stood up. “I’m older than you, you know!”
“By a year or two at most. Still just a wounded kitten,” he said, his voice light with amusement.
I looked at him seriously. “Harvey, I’ve been divorced. I even donated a kidney. My health isn’t great.”

My voice faltered as guilt crept in. I couldn’t bring myself to taint someone as pure as him with my fractured soul. “We’re not a good match.”
Silence hung between us, stretching long enough that I let out a barely audible sigh, thinking he’d finally understood. Rejection, after all, was simpler when dealt with directly.
“And so what?” Harvey’s voice broke the quiet.
I blinked. “What?”
