The rain poured harder, washing over us, blurring the world into a haze.
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then, suddenly, Stacy broke down and sobbed.
After the Scott siblings were sentenced to death, there were whispers that they had been trying to find a way out.
Nicholas actually managed to escape, breaking free on his way to the execution grounds.
The police chased him all the way to the docks.
There, by the sea, he was shot more than twenty times.
He died on the spot.
As for my adoptive parents, they were sentenced to twenty years in prison.
When the news came out, Stacy killed herself.
Maybe she truly felt like she had lost everything, with no way to claw her way back.
Or maybe, just maybe, she still believed that dying would give her another chance at rebirth.
But who could say for sure?
I shut my laptop and walked over to the sink to wash my hands.
Through the window, I saw Sophie and Jenna standing outside the research institute with the rest of our old classmates from Class Thirteen.
They were waving at me.
I turned to my mentor. “I’d like to take the evening off. We have a group gathering.”
She gave me a sidelong glance.
“You said it as if I don’t let you have a life outside the lab.”
She waved me off. “Go. You’re too young to be holed up in here like a workaholic all the time.”
I smiled, lifting a hand in farewell before heading downstairs.
As the elevator doors slid open, the view of the spacious first–floor lobby stretched before me.
The golden light of the setting sun spilled in, painting everything in warm hues.
My friends were waiting for me just ahead.
And the road before me was nothing but light.
