But all I did was left my initials at the bottom of the letter.
Kian’s mother brought over several thick notebooks.
When I opened the first one, I realized they were his journals.
The very first sentence read:
“His name is Sora Hart, like the clear sky after the rain. He is my sunshine.”
The entries stretched back to middle school.
“He was so small when he bumped into me, bowed his head, and whispered sorry.”

“I see him chugging water every day. Why does he drink so much? Is he always that thirsty?”
“There’s always a faint, comforting scent on him. I don’t know why, but I keep wanting to lean in and smell it.”
“Turns out, he drinks so much water because he’s hungry. He’s starving. I donated money to him. I hope he never has to go hungry again.”
“Is he hungry again? How do I give him more money? Maybe through the student council… They always have work -study opportunities. I’ll have Joey pass one to him.”
I suddenly remembered the part–time job I had in high school–cleaning the storage room for the student council.
They always paid me twenty dollars each time.
So, it was all because of him.
Silent tears streamed down my face.
Kian’s mother handed me a tissue.
I took it, sniffled, and whispered, “Thank you.”
There were so many more entries, every single one about me.
This notebook started from the day I became his assistant.
“Sora was busy today, but I didn’t want him out of my sight for even a second.”
“Sora always smells so good. It’s my favorite scent. He says he never wears cologne.”
“His scent… It’s like my body already knows I’m drawn to him.”
“Sora wore a blue jacket today. I’m going home at lunch to change into a matching one.”
“Sora keeps chatting with Dolly. Does he like her?”
“Sora is amazing. I asked him to take a certification exam, and he passed it in no time. What a brilliant mind!” Tears streamed down my face, my sobs shaking my whole body.
Kian’s mother finally spoke.
“I only understood how much my son loves you after reading these. He has been watching over you since school. I know what kind of person he is–stubborn to the core.
“If he wasn’t absolutely certain that you felt the same, he would have never confessed. He has to be sure about everything before making a move.
“So, the moment he realized your feelings, he rushed home to come out to his family.
“He said he wanted to eliminate every possible obstacle in advance, to make sure you’d never suffer because of him.”
The last page of the diary was wrinkled, as if it had been stained by water–maybe tears..
There were only two lines written on it.
