glanced at the photos on my phone, gripping it tightly.
If Jake really has HIV, then that whole clinic visit was just a setup to deceive me!
I pulled out my phone and called a contact I’d met while doing accounting work–a businessman with connections in the medical
industry.
“I need your help investigating a clinic and a person…”
Ten minutes later, I hung up. Now, I was just one step away from finishing this.
He had nearly infected me, and he’d almost cost my parents their life savings. I wasn’t about to let him get away with it.
Hack home, I told my parents, “I’m going to get engaged to Jake ”
Five days later, it was our engagement party.
It had been arranged quickly, and since most of my relatives were out of town, the event mainly consisted of his family members and some business associates from the Allen family. I had nudged Jake to invite them, suggesting it would be a good networking opportunity.

Once everyone had arrived, I signaled the host, who took the stage and began the introduction.
“Today, we’re here to celebrate the engagement of the lovely Laura Jefferson and the charming Jake Allen. I’m sure everyone’s curious about their love story. Let’s take a look back at some of their special moments-”
As the host spoke, the big screen lit up, casting a glow over everyone’s faces.
The first images that appeared were the photos I’d taken at Jake’s house–the HIV medications, Jake’s name on the prescription, and the comparisons I’d found online.
Clear as day, the letters “HIV” stood out on the s
screen.
“What the hell?”
The crowd gasped in shock.
Jake’s face turned ashen. He leaped to his feet, his voice frantic. “Who put this up? Turn it off, now!”
The AV tech, clearly stunned, glanced at me–since I’d handed him the USB drive–then quickly hit the power button, and the screen went dark.
Jake let out a sigh of relief, but I was already striding up to the stage. I took the microphone from the bewildered host and faced the audience.
“My name is Laura Jefferson, and I’m here today to expose how Jake Allen and his family tried to hide his HIV diagnosis and trick me into marriage!”
