“You had time for drinks with your buddies but not for a health check?” I still couldn’t shake my doubts.
Jake paused, then his face lit up. “So that’s why you’ve been ghosting me!”
He sighed. “You must’ve seen Mike’s post, right? I really was supposed to go on that business trip, but Dad needed me to handle something last minute. I didn’t fly out until the next day. Since it was also Mike’s birthday, we got together that night to
celebrate.”
To back up his story, he showed me his messages, which did match what he was saying. My suspicions finally started to fade.
“Laura, let’s promise to talk things out from now on, okay? I don’t want to go through another silent treatment like that,” Jake said, stepping closer and taking my arm. “You have no idea how much it hurts.”
Looking into his sincere eyes, I felt a twinge of guilt and nodded.
After that, I quickly agreed to let our parents meet. That weekend, our families got together at a restaurant,
“We’ve already bought a house for Jake and Laura, over in Meadowbrook Estates,” Jake’s dad said, handing over the deed. “It’s in
Laura’s name.”
My parents and I were stunned. My dad accepted the deed and asked, “You only put Laura’s name on it?”

“That was Jake’s idea,” his dad replied, glancing at Jake. “He said he wanted to give Laura some security. So that, no matter what
happens between them, Laura would always have a place to call her own.”
Jake smiled, looking a bit sheepish.
I gazed at him, touched. He’d mentioned the house to me before, saying it would be in both our names and even asking for my ID and signature. I hadn’t expected he’d end up putting it solely in my name.
Warmth flooded through me, along with a deepening sense of appreciation.
