In the grand cathedral, Duncan stood tall in his crisp white tuxedo, looking every bit the prince charming from a fairy tale. Yet his face was devoid of joy despite being the groom. Beside him, Heather beamed radiantly, as stunning as a cover model.
The who’s who of high society filled the pews, marveling at the opulent decor. But just as Duncan was about to slip the ring onto Heather’s finger, a commotion erupted outside.
“Duncan! Where’s Audrey? What have you done with her?” Josh’s voice boomed through the church. Audrey had told him she was ready to leave, but when he had gone to find her earlier, she had vanished. The evasive answers from the Millington staff had only fueled his suspicions.
Duncan, bewildered by the sudden interruption, asked, “Audrey’s missing?”
Josh grabbed Duncan’s lapels, barely containing his rage. “Don’t play dumb! Audrey went to see you. She can’t see, so she couldn’t have gone far. If she’s missing, you must have done something!”
Duncan’s heart skipped a beat. Audrey… blind? How was that possible?
“No, that can’t be right… She was fine. How could she suddenly go blind?” Duncan struggled to process this information. He had hated Audrey for her betrayal and had punished her cruelly, but he never imagined she’d lose her sight.
-and that He had once sworn to himself that he’d live a picture–perfect life–a loving family, beautiful children- Audrey would watch from afar, consumed by regret for leaving him. He wanted her to spend her life in misery, paying for her betrayal.
But if she was blind, she wouldn’t even be able to see his happiness. There would be no regret. His entire plan crumbled in an instant.
Seeing Duncan deflate like a punctured balloon, Josh released his grip and said, “Audrey is dying, and you’re getting married. Why can’t you just let her go?”
“What are you talking about?” Heather stepped in front of Duncan protectively. “Duncan didn’t hide Audrey. She tried to kill me because she couldn’t stand seeing us together. Duncan saved me just in time. A woman like Audrey isn’t worth Duncan’s time, let alone his protection. She’s probably run off somewhere.”
Josh considered Heather’s words. Maybe she was right. Duncan was a man of status. Even if he hated Audrey, he wouldn’t secretly hide her on his wedding day.
But where could Audrey have gone? She couldn’t see–was she in danger?
Josh turned to leave, but Duncan grabbed his arm.
Heather, panicked, tried to pull Duncan back. “Duncan, let him go!”
Duncan glared at Josh, who returned the stare with seething hatred. But Duncan wasn’t looking for a fight–he wanted answers. He needed to know if he had misjudged Audrey. Maybe, just maybe, there was still a chance to make things right.
We need to talk,” Duncan said, his tone brooking no argument.
Josh smirked, his expression dripping with disdain. “Mr. Millington, aren’t you worried about ruining your big day?” He glanced at Heather, whose beauty couldn’t mask the sharpness in her eyes–so different from Audrey’s gentle grace.
Duncan didn’t respond. Without a word, he strode out of the church. Behind him, Heather’s face contorted with
