Chapter 20
Chapter 20
Just as Josh was about to turn away, two sleek SUVs pulled ip in front of Duncan Out stepped the Millington and Leverton family members, along with a fumming Heather.
Janet, Duncan’s mother, stormed forward and slapped him hard across the face. “You ungrateful brat! Walking out on Heather in the middle of your wedding what were you thinking?!”
Duncan said nothing, silently enduring Janet’s tirade.
Heather approached, but when she saw Duncan cradling Audrey’s lifeless body, her face twitched. Had Duncan figured everything out? Or had Audrey said something before she died?
“Duncan, you…”
“Audrey’s back. Heather, I won’t marry you. It’s over.” Duncan’s voice was cold, robotic.
Janet froze, finally noticing Audrey in Duncan’s arms. The color drained from her face. Audrey was dead.
Duncan’s father, Seamus, along with Heather’s parents, approached. They knew about Audrey, Duncan’s ex- girlfriend. A year ago, she had run off with another man after taking Duncan’s money. But why was she now lying dead in his arms?
“What’s going on, son?” Seamus asked, sensing the gravity of the situation. Duncan wouldn’t have agreed to marry Heather if he were still hung up on his ex
“Dad, I’m marrying Audrey. Today,” Duncan declared, his tone brooking no argument.
“You’ve lost your mind! You want to marry a corpse?” Janet was apoplectic.
Heather stood there, stunned. “Duncan, no… you can’t… I won’t allow it! You can’t marry Audrey, especially not when she’s dead! You can’t!”
Heather grabbed Duncan’s arm, trying to pull him away, but he looked down at Audrey, completely ignoring her. “Duncan must be out of his mind,” Heather’s father, Carl Leverton, fumed. “The whole city knows you’re marrying my daughter today, and now you’re backing out? Do you think our family is a joke?”
“Carl, calm down. Give Duncan some time. I’m sure he’ll sort this out,” Seamus interjected, knowing better than to make decisions for his son. This was Duncan’s life, after all.
Tired of arguing, Duncan held Audrey tighter and kept walking. But Heather, unwilling to let go, pulled at him, screaming and trying to yank Audrey’s body from his arms, Duncan, let go! I won’t let you carry a dead woman! You’re my groom–you can’t carry a corpse on our wedding day, especially not Audrey!”
Heather’s true colors emerged as soon as Duncan said he would marry Audrey instead.
Duncan held Audrey tighter, refusing to let go, but Heather almost succeeded in pulling her from his arms.
“Touch her one more time, Heather, and I’ll kill you right here!” Duncan’s voice was glacial, filled with deadly intent.
Heather froze in terror, and the elders around them were equally shocked. Duncan had completely lost it after Audrey’s death.
No matter how bitter and resentful Heather felt, she knew better than to push Duncan any further. Audrey’s death wasn’t just a line Duncan wouldn’t let her cross–it was a live wire, a lethal boundary.
Touch it, and death was certain.
