Though Seamus didn’t know the full reason behind Duncan’s plan to bring down the Leverton family, he believed their arrogance needed to be checked. On the tenth day of the Leverton family’s stock plummeting, they declared bankruptcy and secretly attempted to transfer assets.
Unable to bear the pressure from her family, Heather went to plead with Duncan. He sat with a file in his hands, not sparing her a single glance. Heather was on the verge of tears. “Duncan, please, can you let my family off? IL was you who left me at the altar, lumiliating us. My parents cutting off supplies to Quartet Enterprises was just their way of retaliating!”
Duncan didn’t care about the Leverton family cutting off the supply chain. Quartet Enterprises had plent hidden suppliers they weren’t aware of.

“I just want to ask you one thing–did you poison Audrey with thallium a year ago?” He already knew the answer, but he wanted to hear Heather admit it herself.
Heather’s face paled at his question. “Duncan, no, I would never do that!”
“Really? Then what about the six million the company lost a year ago? Are you going to tell me that had nothing to do with you either?”
“…I…” Heather stammered, her panic palpable. Did he know everything?
“The money wasn’t taken by Audrey. You forged her signature and took it, then framed her.”
“It wasn’t me, it wasn’t me! It was your mother! She lost money gambling and was being chased by debt collectors. She told me to forge Audrey’s signature and take the money. Duncan, you have to believe me. It was all your mother’s doing! She made me do it!” Heather cried desperately, hoping to shift the blame.
Duncan had suspected this, but hearing it confirmed felt like a blow. So, it wasn’t Audrey who took the money. Quartet Enterprises had been their joint effort, their shared dream–Audrey would never have jeopardized the
company.
The one who took the money was his own mother.
He had known about his mother’s gambling problem since childhood. She would sneak off to casinos, lose everything, and cover it up by pawning household items. His father had always turned a blind eye. But this time, she had crossed the line by framing Audrey, making Duncan believe it was her, fueling his hatred.
Heather, sensing his disbelief, added, “Your mother promised me that if I helped her, she’d make sure you married me. You can ask her yourself.”
Heather knew that marrying Duncan was now out of the question. All she hoped for was to avoid prison for the six million and for Duncan not to discover that she had been the one who poisoned Audrey with thallium.
Duncan’s heart twisted painfully as he listened to Heather. He had suspected that Audrey wasn’t responsible for taking the money, but hearing Heather confess only intensified his fury. The anger he had suppressed finally crupted.
He wouldn’t let Heather get away with this. Audrey had suffered, and Heather would pay for it a thousand times.
over.
Duncan stood up slowly, his gaze sharp as a blade. “Are you sure you didn’t poison Audrey?”
Heather had denied it before, but Duncan was convinced she had been the one to poison Audrey. Still, he her to confess. And if she didn’t, he had plenty of ways to make her.
