Chapter 34
As Duncan stepped out of the house, he realized he’d forgotten his phone, Desperate, he approached a store assistant at the supermarket and asked to borrow her phone. The elderly woman, seeing his youthful face contrasted with his snow–white hair, teared up.
“Son, don’t worry, take my phone and make your call,” she said gently.
Duncan dialed Audrey’s number, but it came up as an Invalid number. Frustrated, he tried dialing again, changing a few digits, convinced that he had simply remembered it incorrectly.
This time, the phone connected, but a man’s voice answered, informing him that he’d dialed the wrong number.
Panic gripped him, and Duncan started pacing in circles, unsure of what to do next. At that moment, a woman approached him.
“Excuse me, sir, could you please step aside?” Her voice was soft and pleasant, and as Duncan turned to look at her, his heart nearly stopped–she looked exactly like his Audrey.
Overcome with emotion, Duncan pulled her into his arms, tears of joy streaming down his face. “Audrey, I finally found you! Please don’t leave me again. I’m so afraid… afraid that I’ll lose you forever. I can’t live without you.”
The woman was completely taken aback, struggling against him, her face filled with confusion. “Hey! What are you doing, you pervert? Let go of me! I’m not who you’re looking for! You’ve got the wrong person!”
“No, I haven’t! You’re my Audrey; I know I’m not wrong” Duncan held her even tighter, unwilling to let go.
A small crowd began to gather around them. “Girl, don’t fight with your husband in public. It’s obvious he’s been worried sick about you. Go home with him,” one of the store assistants said, clearly moved by Duncan’s distressed appearance and prematurely grayed hair.
The woman, now at a loss for words, felt trapped. No one believed her, and everyone assumed they were a couple in the middle of a spat.
The truth was, she did know about Audrey. The name was notorious in the city–Audrey had died, and after her death, a man named Duncan had married her in a bizarre posthumous ceremony.
Now standing face–to–face with the famous Duncan, she realized just how similar he looked to the man in the news, complete with the same sorrowful white hair. But there was something different about him–he seemed a bit out of touch with reality.
Well, if that was the case, why not play along? thought Lucy Clark. Her own boyfriend was useless and broke. Trading him for someone wealthy like Duncan might just be the opportunity of a lifetime.
And so, Lucy decided to play along, pretending to be Audrey, and followed Duncan back to his luxurious estate.
When they arrived, Duncan eagerly took the groceries from Lucy’s hands, proudly announcing that he would cook dinner. In all the years he’d spent with Audrey, he had never once cooked. She had always prepared hot meals for him, and now, he wanted to do something for her in return.
He wanted to make sure that, from now on, he would be the one cooking for her every day.
Lucy, on the other hand, had spent years cooking for her previous boyfriend and was thoroughly sick of it. Seeing Duncan so eager to take over, she was more than happy to let him.
Besides, she knew just how well–off Duncan was; even a random decoration in his home was worth enough to last her a lifetime. If she could stay here forever, she’d be set.
But Lucy also knew that Duncan’s family wasn’t stupid. They wouldn’t let her stay in his life for long. They’d see

through her act eventually.
An hour later, Duncan proudly presented the dishes he had cooked. “Audrey, dinner’s ready,” he called out with a smile.
Lucy looked at the food on the table and immediately lost or appetite. The cabbage was burnt, the meat was drenched in sauce every dish looked like a disaster. Even dog would turn its nose up at this meal.
Duncan knew the food wasn’t perfect, but this was the first time he’d ever cooked for the woman he loved. He felt both excited and nervous, hoping she’d appreciate the effor
To stay in his good graces, Lucy forced herself to eat a few tes of the meat, smiling awkwardly. Duncan’s face lit up with joy as he saw her eating what he had made.
However, when Duncan finally tasted the food himself, his expression immediately darkened. It was terrible. But then he thought back to Audrey. She had always been so kind to him, never pointing out his flaws. To her, he had always been perfect, even when he made mistakes.
No matter what he did wrong, in her eyes, he could never be anything but right.
