A bitter smile appeared on Duncan’s face. Was this a sign that her illness had worsened? Her memory was beginning to fade. Soon, Audrey might forget all the little things he loved, and eventually, she might even forget
him.
Meanwhile, Lucy continued eating her breakfast without a care, reminding Duncan to eat as well.
After they finished breakfast, Duncan finally mentioned taking Lucy to the doctor. Lucy had thought she might get through the day without him bringing it up, but there it was unavoidable.
She couldn’t escape it. All she could do now was face it.
Pushing her empty plate toward Duncan, Lucy said cheerfully, “Duncan, look, I finished everything! I can eat, drink, and sleep just fine. I’m all better. I don’t need to go to the hospital.”
Duncan pushed the plate aside, his eyes fixed on her. Her face did look healthy, but her memory was shipping. That was why he had to take her to the hospital today. He couldn’t bear the thought of Audrey disappearing from his life, leaving him to live alone in a world without her.
He wouldn’t let that happen. Not ever.
Lucy had underestimated Duncan’s persistence. Realizing she couldn’t avoid it, she called Seamus for help. Only when Seamus confirmed that everything was arranged did Lucy finally agree to go to the hospital with Duncan
What she hadn’t expected was to run into Peter Leverton at the hospital.
Peter was Lucy’s current boyfriend, and when he saw his girlfriend–who had been missing for a day and a night- walking in, he was overjoyed. But his excitement faded the moment he saw Duncan by her side. Peter quickly ducked out of sight.
He hadn’t forgotten how his family, the Leverton family, had fallen. Duncan had blamed them for Audrey’s death and had destroyed their family, even at the cost of damaging his own company. Heather Leverton had died a miserable death, and the rest of the family was barely scraping by.
Now, Peter was relying on women to survive, and even his current lifeline–Lucy–was slipping away into Duncan’s grasp.
The thought filled him with hatred and bitterness. But now, he had a plan. Lucy still had feelings for him, right? She could ask Duncan for money. After all, Duncan owed the Leverton family. It was only fair that some of that money went to him.
Watching Lucy glance back repeatedly as she followed Duncan into the consultation room, Peter quickly typed a message and sent it to her.
Peter hadn’t expected to wait long, but just five minutes later, Lucy came out looking flustered and scared, as if terrified of being caught..
“Peter, I’m breaking up with you. From now on, don’t contact me again,” Lucy whispered urgently, keeping her voice as low as possible.
Peter quickly realized what was happening. Lucy had snagged a wealthy man and now wanted to dump him. She was clearly afraid Duncan would discover Peter’s existence and ruin their arrangement.
Feeling smug, Peter replied, “Lucy, you think you can just break up with me like that? Not so fast. Give me five

hundred thousand, and we’ll talk.”

Lucy was furious, almost spitting blood on the spot. For months, Peter had been living off her, eating her food, and wearing clothes she’d bought him. Now, he wanted a breakup fee? Five hundred thousand? He might as well rob a bank!
Lucy kicked Peter hard in the leg. “Peter, grow up and be a man! We’ve only been dating for three months. In those three months, you haven’t spent a single penny on me. You’ve used my money for everything, and now your have the nerve to ask me for a breakup fee? Why don’t you just drop dead?”
