Ethan emerged from the elevator, phone to his ear: “What’s going on now? I could hear your arguing from a mile away. Don’t you
know it’ll frighten the pup?”
Ethan continued. “I need to get back to the enforcement office immediately. There’s a case about rogues who attacked a pregnant
she–wolf. They’ve been captured and are requesting clemency.”
As he finished speaking, his eyes fell on my slender figure, and he asked Alexander:
“Brother, has Aria given birth?”
Alexander snapped back to reality at those words, gripping my shoulders and shaking me:
“It was premature, right? Aria, don’t scare me like this.”
Hearing Alexander’s panicked questions, I shoved his hands away in disgust. “What kind of pup survives being born at five
months?” My words cut into him like knives.
But my heart was bleeding too.
The memory of the knife piercing my stomach, feeling my baby’s life slowly fading away–it was still vivid in my mind.
I had never hated anyone as much as I did now.
A tidal wave of rage engulfed me. If he had answered my mindlink, if he had been willing to listen to me for just one moment, if
he had felt my desperate plea for help, our pup would still be alive!
