“He loved Marcus! He was just trying to protect us, but he loved his son!”
A wave of alcohol–laced cedar hit me. Ryan stumbled from the Council building, barely recognizable.
His once–proud form had crumbled. The tailored suits replaced by wrinkled clothes that hung off his frame. His golden eyes wer dull, bloodshot from wolfsbane wine. His cheeks were hollow, his hands trembling.
When he saw Sarah, his face twisted with hatred.
“Get away from her,” he snarled, his voice hoarse. “Haven’t you done enough?”
Sarah flinched back, pulling Jamie behind her. The boy who’d once tormented my son now cowered like prey.

Ryan’s eyes met mine, and for a moment, I saw the mate I’d once loved. His gaze traveled over my transformation – from the abused mate he’d left in a basement to the powerful healer I’d become.
“Celeste…” He swayed slightly, reeking of defeat. “Are you
well?”
