Marissa noticed the rift between me and my parents, so she stayed with me for a few days. She took me out to see the lakes and mountains.
“I’ve been wanting to bring you here for so long, but the timing was never right. How are you holding up?” she asked.
“I’m fine. Whatever doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger. Besides, I can’t let down the people who actually care about me,” I explained, smiling at her.
I was still Mom and Dad’s child, after all. I had lived under the same roof as them for over 20 years and knew exactly how biased they could be toward Laura.
But the truth was, she only seemed like the favorite because they compared her to me. The one who truly mattered most to them had always been Melvin.
Laura crossed the line when she went after their beloved Melvin. The foster daughter who once knew how to win over Mom and Dad had suddenly become insignificant to them.
It devastated them when they found out she had manipulated Melvin into hurting me. There was no chance they’d let some woman mess up his future.

So they took the video I recorded–proof of Laura’s affair with Elias–and handed it over to Quentin, the head of the Levy family.
As soon as Quentin found out the truth, he filed for divorce. Laura was kicked out of the Levy family with nothing.
When she returned to the Sorensen residence, Mom and Dad told her they were revoking her status as their foster daughter and
banned her from coming back.
After Laura’s dance academy learned about her actions, they dismissed her for immoral conduct. She ended up dancing in nightclubs and bars just to get by.
One night, she tried to fight off a drunk who was groping her and ended up with a scar on her face. Things only went downhill from there.
Meanwhile, Quentin’s coldness didn’t surprise me at all. He was the type of guy who saw marriage as nothing but a way to shut the Levys up. It didn’t matter whether he was marrying me or Laura.
Now, Laura was just the woman who’d wronged him, and he wasn’t the kind of guy to keep someone like that around.
It was the same as when I went through hell, and he decided to call off our engagement, ignoring the deep connections between the Levy and Sorensen families.
Still, I didn’t expect Quentin to come looking for me in person.
