“Alright, Nate.”

She hesitated, thinking of the engagement. After an internal debate, she finally mustered the courage to bring it up.
“Nate, as you know, I’ve just come out of a long, painful relationship. I’m not ready for another one. About this engagement…”
She had expected him to feel awkward or embarrassed, but his expression remained calm.
“It’s fine,” he said. “I’ll explain it to my mother. On my way here, I was already wondering how to reject the idea without
damaging our families‘ friendship. But now that it turns out to be you, I’m not worried. Even if we don’t go through with the engagement, we’ll still be friends, right?”

comforting.
As they talked, she realized how much they had in common. Shared interests, similar habits. Before long, they had settled into an
easy friendship, meeting up often.
One afternoon, after feeding seagulls by the sea, he drove her home. Standing by the doorway, they chatted about the small incidents that had happened during their trip. Neither noticed how much time had passed.
Then, from behind her, she heard a voice she hadn’t heard in a long time.
“Violet.”
