Chapter 8
Antonio’s heart felt like it was hit by something. He remembered how pale Grace had looked when she asked for his help. Could it have been then?
But what had he been doing?
He had been pushing her to give blood and then left her all alone there.
The doctor looked down at Antonio’s hand on his collar and asked
carefully. “Mr. Kaufman, could you please let go?”
Antonio came back to his senses and pushed the doctor hard against the wall. “Why did Grace lose so much blood from a cornea transplant? What
did you do to her?”
“I… I didn’t do anything. When Mrs. Kaufman was brought in, she was already bleeding.”
Antonio pushed the doctor away roughly and walked over to the bed. He grabbed Grace’s hand and saw a deep cut on her wrist, much deeper than
Lucile’s.
He had no idea when Grace got that cut.
But he couldn’t believe she would just die in front of him. He threw the doctor to the side of the bed. “She’s not dead! Save her! Or I’ll kill you!”
“Mr. Kaufman, even if you kill me, I can’t bring someone back from the dead.”
The doctor took out a document from the nurse that Antonio had signed earlier. “I asked you before whether to continue the surgery if there were
problems. You said to keep going, no matter what happened to your wife, as long as Miss Lucile was okay. Here’s your signature, plain as day. You can’t cause trouble here.”
With that, the doctor took advantage of Antonio’s daze and left.
“Antonio, let’s go see Lucile.”
Silvia looked at Grace’s body. She was a little shaken, but she was more worried about her own daughter Lucile.
“Lucile’s wrist was bleeding before she got here, and with the car accident earlier…”
Before Silvia could finish, Antonio cut in coldly, “You can go. I’m staying
here with Grace.”
“But…” Silvia frowned. “Lucile needs you. She’ll want to see you first when she wakes up. Don’t you love her too?”
“Antonio, stop being silly. Grace is gone. She doesn’t need you around anymore. But Lucile…”
“Isn’t Grace your daughter?” Antonio looked up, his eyes icy cold as he glared at Silvia and Eloy. “You raised her for 20 years. Even if she’s not your own flesh and blood, don’t you have a shred of decency?”
Antonio didn’t say anything else. He knelt on the ground, holding Grace’s hand, and didn’t move.
He stayed there all day, just kneeling.
It wasn’t until Antonio coughed up some blood and passed out that Eloy took Grace’s body to the crematorium in the middle of the night.
“Grace!”
As soon as Antonio woke up, he looked for Grace, but all he saw was

Lucile sitting by the bed.
Lucile threw herself into his arms. “Antonio, good to see you again! I was so scared I’d never see you again.”
Antonio’s body got stiff, and he pushed her away. “Grace died because of you.”
“I… I heard from Mom and Dad.”
Lucile was a bit upset, but she held back her feelings and took Antonio’s hand. “Antonio, it was an accident. Nobody wanted this to happen, right? Grace’s body has already been cremated, and my parents have found a nice spot for her.”
