Quinn and I met with Chuck and Harry again, but not in the way we had expected,
The two of them had taken a month of paid leave because of the previous bombing incident. When I called Chuck, I almost
thought his voice sounded hoarse, as if things hadn’t been going well for him lately.
My suspicions were confirmed when we met again.
He didn’t have anyone to take care of him. The housekeeper only managed the basics, like tidying up, cooking, and laundry.
Chuck looked slightly haggard. As he sat across from me, I even felt a hint of grievance in his gaze. It was almost like he was
blaming me for leaving him behind.
I took a sip of coffee and asked directly, “Chuck, the police contacted us and said there’s evidence Melinda was involved in the bombing. Is that true?”
Chuck froze, looking at me. I didn’t know if he was trying to convince me or himself, but his voice wavered as he repeated the
same sentence twice. “No way, Mel wouldn’t do something like that.”
A cold smile tugged at the corners of my lips. “Chuck, what would you do if it turns out she did? Would you seek justice for me and
our child who died?”
Chuck’s gaze went blank. He clearly had not, or didn’t dare to consider this outcome. I remembered that throughout the past year of trying to conceive, he had often spoken of his hopes for a child.
How could it be? How could Melinda be involved?
His tone turned bitter. “Mel, Harry, and I grew up together. We only lost touch when she went abroad in middle school.
“She’s always been delicate; she’s afraid even of bugs. How could she do something like this?” He looked at me. “Scarlett, can you just stop fixating on Mel?”
“Answer me, Chuck.” I interrupted him. “If the culprit is Melinda, would you avenge our dead child?”
