Chapter 51
Just before boarding: the plane, I was about to turn off my phone when I got a text message.
The contac ane was LehLİ.
My hand trembled as I opened it, and there, in front of me, was a picture. I zoomed in it was an invitation. Another message followed right after.
Selena wrote: [Sebastian, I’m getting married. Here’s the invite. If you’re free, bring Jess and come.]
1 stood there stupidly, staring at the invitation.
After what seemed like an eternity, I finally typed back: [Sure. I hope you’ll have a lifetime of happiness.]
Maybe by this point, the truth didn’t matter anymore.
In the end, I attended Selena’s wedding. I kept my distance, watching from afar.
She looked stunning. Her wedding dress flowed out behind her, thirty feet of white silk embroidered with roses so lifelike, they almost seemed to bloom with every step she took. I remembered how she once told me that when she got married, she wanted to wear a dress covered in roses.
She had made her dream come true.
The ceremony began soon after. Her parents weren’t there of course, so it was her brother, Christopher, who walked her down the aisle.
The church was lit up, its long red carpet lined with people scattering petals and white feathers. The sunlight outside made it feel like something out of a dream, like we were all in a fairy tale. Selena was beaming with happiness as she walked arm–in–arm with Christopher.
The groom, waiting anxiously at the other end of the aisle, stood tense but excited. His eyes shone with a mixture of nerves and joy as he watched the woman he loved slowly make her way toward him.
I could tell how much he loved Selena.
The groom couldn’t wait any longer, rushing forward and extending his hand. Everyone laughed at his actions, including me.
In the midst of the laughter, the groom took Selena’s hand from Christopher. They shared a smile and a look that spoke volumes–unspoken understanding and pure happiness, blending seamlessly with the sunlight around
them.
The priest stood in front of them, smiling as he recited the words everyone knew by heart. Selena and the groom looked into each other’s eyes as if they hadn’t heard a single word, but both answered in unison.
“I do.”
The crowd erupted into applause as they kissed, sealing their vows in front of everyone. In that moment, they were the happiest people in the world. Amidst the burst of artificial snowflakes and petals falling like rain, the groom couldn’t resist lifting Selena into his arms and spinging her around.
I turned and walked out of the church.
That kind, intelligent, beautiful woman was going to have lifetime of happiness.
Just as I stepped outside, a woman ran up to me and bumped into me.

“Oh! I’m so sorry!” she said in perfect English.
I smiled and responded in the same language, “It’s okay.”

She looked me over carefully, then suddenly gasped and exclaimed, “Wait… you’re Mr. Grant? Sebastian Grant?”
I paused, surprised. For a moment, I couldn’t place her.
The woman looked at me and said, “Mr. Grant, you were my tutor when you were in grad school. My name is Wendy Lloyd. Do you remember me?”
I took another look at her, and the memories slowly came back. Yes, I remembered her–I had tutored her for tw whole years back then.
