A sudden phone call broke the silence, startling me. I floated over to see the caller ID–it was Daniel.
Man, he was persistent.
Samuel answered but said nothing.
It was Daniel who spoke first. “I think it’s time to clear some things up. I don’t want that foolish woman to carry the bad name with her even in death.”
He paused for a few seconds before continuing, “Back then, I only wanted revenge for the wine bottle you smashed over my head. I used your future to threaten Kristen, and she agreed to comply with my wishes.
“I thought if she came to me willingly, I’d take care of her and the child she was carrying–your child. But she was too loyal. She didn’t care for me at all, and I had no intention of forcing her. What if she stabbed me in my sleep someday? It wouldn’t have been worth it.
“After watching you torment her during all those years, I thought she might come to her senses and approach me. But in the end, she died. And for what? To donate her bone marrow to your mistress. Isn’t that ridiculous?
“Are you even human, Samuel? I came back from abroad only to find out she’s been dead for three years. You piece of—”
On the other end, Daniel suddenly lost control and began firing a long line of insults and profanities at Samuel.
I couldn’t understand this man at all.
Samuel ended the call, cutting off Daniel’s furious tirade.
I no longer wanted to watch Samuel being tormented by grief and pain. I had thought I would feel satisfaction seeing him break down upon learning of my death. However, there was no joy left in me.
I floated out of the house and found Toby already asleep on the branches of a nearby tree. Wrapping my transparent form around him, I kissed his cute little face over and over as he slept.
Over the past two days, I felt my soul becoming lighter, as if the bonds tying me to this world were slowly loosening.
Perhaps Toby and I could pass on and finally forget the pain in this life very soon.
