But Samuel was behaving strangely. Despite the stifling heat, he didn’t bother restoring the electricity to the house. Every night, he lay in the pitch–black room, sweating as if he were in a sauna.
In the middle of the night, sometimes he cried, and sometimes he laughed. He was like a madman.
He cleaned the courtyard and the house until they were spotless, even piquing Jessie’s curiosity as she observed from next door.
She caught him staring blankly at the gate and asked, “Are you planning to sell the house? But this is a haunted house. It won’t be easy to sell it.”
Samuel ignored her, turned around, and slammed the gate shut.
On the seventh day of his stay here, Violet showed up.
She looked shocked at the tidied courtyard, and her expression quickly turned into one of anger. She yelled, “So, you’ve been ignoring my calls and messages just to clean up the place for her?”

Samuel didn’t answer. He continued his work silently.
Violet rushed forward and snatched the trowel from his hand. Then, she threw it to the ground. “What do you mean by this, Samuel? Are you mocking me? Are you and your wife planning to reconcile now? What am I, then? What do you take me for?”
Samuel stood up slowly. He gazed at her indifferently. “I won’t ever get to reconcile with her.”
Violet was stunned. “Then why are you here? The doctor said I have acute myeloid leukemia and need a bone marrow transplant urgently. Convince Kristen. If she wants money, I’ll give her whatever she wants.”
Samuel let out a cold laugh. “If you want it so badly, go to the underworld and ask her yourself.”
Violet took a step back in shock. “What… What do you mean?”
Samuel flashed her a chilling smile. “What do I mean? Don’t you know? Three years ago, you said you were dying and desperately needed a bone marrow transplant. At that time, Kristen was already sick, yet the doctor you found assured us it wouldn’t affect her health.”
Violet froze, unable to respond.
“You knew that with a weakened immune system, donating bone marrow could lead to severe complications. But you still insisted on it. Kristen died of a systemic infection a week after donating her bone marrow to you. Are you satisfied now?”
Samuel’s voice grew hysterical. It was as if he had finally found an outlet for his long–suppressed rage.
Violet’s eyes darted around nervously, and she hastily denied it. “That’s impossible! The doctor said she was fine when she was discharged and sent home!”
Samuel stepped forward suddenly and grabbed her by the neck. He growled, “This is all because of you! If it weren’t for you, Kristen wouldn’t have died. This is what you deserve. You deserve to have a relapse and suffer from leukemia again. This time, no one will save you.”
Violet stared straight into his eyes and let out a mocking laugh. “Don’t pretend to be so devoted. Who forced Kristen to go for the HLA typing? You! I may have pushed for the transplant, but who dragged her here when she was already sick? It was you!
you think I stayed with you because I cared? If you weren’t somewhat useful to me, do you think I would have wasted my time with you? Only a foolish woman like Kristen would have loved you so blindly.”
Samuel’s eyes burned with fury, and his grip tightened around her neck. Violet’s face turned purple. Her struggling hands fell limp at her sides.
At the very last moment, Samuel released her.
Violet collapsed to the ground while coughing violently.
Samuel looked down at her coldly. “I won’t kill you as that would dirty my hands. I’ll let the leukemia torment you until you die. That’s the fate you deserve.”
