A commanding voice cut through the chaos.
The crowd immediately parted as an elderly man walked in, tapping his cane against the floor.
Shawn froze and quickly withdrew his hand, greeting his father.
My father–in–law refused to acknowledge him, making his way straight to Aster. With an outstretched hand, he caressed his most beloved grandson, tears streaming down his weathered and normally stern face.
I couldn’t hold back my own tears either.
My father–in–law had only been away for a few months to receive medical treatment, and the family had been turned completely
upside down.
Shawn stood stiffly behind him, not daring to move a muscle. “Don’t worry, Father. I’ll make sure this woman is locked in jail.”
My father–in–law raised his cane and swung it down swiftly on Shawn’s body, over and over again.

Shawn clenched his fists, veins bulging at his temples in pain, but he didn’t dodge, only enduring the blows in silence.
For the first time in days, I finally felt the slightest bit of satisfaction. I’d wanted to tear those wretched people apart countless
times within the past few days, after all.
But I couldn’t.
The old man didn’t stop until he was out of breath.
“The most she will be sentenced to is instigation and child abuse. How many years do you think she’ll actually serve?”
A wave of bitterness washed over me.
Yes, he was right. Jasmine would get three meals a day and a roof over a head, far too easy a punishment for the atrocities she
committed.
My father–in–law was as wise as he was stern, and he’d already understood the situation on his way here. Pointing a finger at
Jasmine, he ordered the doctors to perform tests on her.
“This woman has clearly gone mad. She should be sent to the mental hospital, don’t you agree?
“Dr. Joan, was it? We’ll transfer you there so you can take good care of her, got it? Don’t go easy on her, now.”
Dr. Joan hesitated for a moment, before understanding dawned, and she nodded furiously.
Jasmine, who was cursing Shawn out relentlessly mere minutes ago, was plunged into a pit of despair. As if she’d foreseen the
miserable fate that awaited her, she collapsed, unconscious.
Just then, as if realizing that justice had finally been served, Aster was finally awake.
