John whimpered. Upon seeing my face, he instinctively took a step back. Chris grabbed him by the collar, forcing him to confront my pale body.
“Look closely! Is this not Sandra?
“You’re unbelievable! She’s died such a tragic death, and you can’t even squeeze out a single tear?”
Usually composed, John covered his facé and broke down in sobs.
“How could she be dead? I… I clearly…”
He did not finish his sentence, and it seemed he did not have the courage to say it. No matter what he thought, I was dead, and he was the one who pushed me toward my demise.
I had never seen him so distraught. He collapsed to the ground, crying so hard that he could not even straighten his back. He repeatedly banged his head against the floor until blood streamed down his forehead when he finally lifted his head.
Chris kicked him in the chest, hatred etched all over his face.
“You still have the nerve to cry? Can’t you act like a man and avenge Sandra? Find the bastard who did this!
“Don’t tell me you don’t know who the killer is!
“Oh, right, I forgot to mention this. The one who got Sandra and me drunk back then was your precious Tammy. I’ve had evidence for a while. However, I thought you and Sandra could live happily ever after, so I didn’t want to bring up this dreadful topic in front of you!”
John struggled to rise and staggered over to me. He gently stroked my face, speaking to me as if I were a child. “Sandy, can you wake up? Let’s go home.”
His hand traveled over my wounds, finally resting on my torn–open stomach. There had once been a tiny heartbeat there, but it was empty then.
Tears dripped from his eyes, landing on my body.
“Sandy, did it hurt?
“Were you scared? I’m sorry I didn’t protect you.
“Sandy, are you feeling frustrated? Don’t be sad. I’ll avenge you. Just wait for me, okay?”
He gently covered me with the white cloth, and as he turned around, a fierce glint shone in his eyes like a vengeful spirit. Even Chris seemed momentarily taken aback.
As John rushed out, Chris grabbed his arm, urging him to think carefully before acting recklessly. However, John violently shook Chris off, his voice hoarse as he declared, “I’ll make that bitch pay!”
John disappeared for three days. During that time, he uncovered the entire truth behind the case.
It was not hard to find; the killer was right beside him. If only he had a hint of suspicion, he could have exposed Tammy’s flaws. However, he had been willfully blind, unable to see anything.
The kidnapper was Tammy’s brother, who was suffering from a terminal illness with little time left. He was dying,o he was worried about Tammy and wanted her to settle down and have a home. The best home he could think of was John, and the only obstacle to overcome was me.
