Chapter 7
I confronted Christian, but he snapped, “Rachel, would you stop being so petty? You think everyone is having an affair! I grew up
with Mina. Now that she needs help, am I supposed to ignore her? You have a husband; you’re not like others. Could you be a little
more understanding?”
They sat together comfortably as if this scene had played out countless times before.
At that moment, I finally understood the source of Christian’s past criticisms and comparisons.
I sneered inside. ‘Well done, Christian. You’ve built yourself quite a collection of homes.‘
He was a two–timer who had sacrificed one daughter for another. No different from someone profiting off others‘ misfortune.
‘Calling you an animal would be an insult to animals.‘
Minnie clung to me, her tiny arms tightening around my waist. “Mom, did you and Dad like that little girl better? I heard him
praise her. He never said those things about me.”
I stroked her hair gently. “Minnie, you’re the best girl in the world. Don’t be sad. He never deserved you.”
In the living room, Mina took over the conversation effortlessly. “You can bring Minnie over now, but we haven’t prepared a
room for her yet. Why not wait a couple of days? Let her stay in a hotel for now, and once everything’s ready, I’ll cook a nice meal
to welcome her.”
Mina put on a sweet ingratiating smile. “Christian, I know it’s hard to be a stepmother, but I’ll do my best. Where is Minnie, by the way? Should we book her a hotel?”
Christian hesitated for a moment before replying, “I don’t know.”
Mina’s expression flickered with something unreadable before she quickly masked it. “You don’t know?”
Christian’s voice turned impatient. “Minnie was discharged from the hospital. I assume Rachel took her somewhere. I have no
idea where they went.”
