I walked out of the hospital and never looked back.
A week later, I heard Cassandra had been resuscitated–barely. The stroke left her paralyzed.

Deke lost it. Stormed into Anita’s hospital room and beat her. She was still weak from surgery, so yeah, it got ugly.
That was her breaking point. She called the cops.

The place reeked. Rotting food, stale air–made me gag. And there she was, Cassandra, limp in bed, eyes dull, body unmoving. Not even a sip of water nearby.
Then she saw me. Her eyes flickered–desperate. She tried to speak, to beg. Nothing came out.
Leaning against the doorframe, I smiled.
“I’m just here to return the key. Don’t worry, Deke will be out in two days.”
Then I turned and left.
By the time he got out, Anita had filed for divorce. The same day he got the papers, he showed up at my office with a diamond ring.
