Before I could dwell on it, I noticed Sigmund adding me to a group chat.
“What’s this? A family group chat? Why am I in your family chat?”
He tapped my forehead lightly. “Not your family. It’s our family.”
I hadn’t fully processed what he meant when the group chat exploded with excitement.
“Welcome, Aunt! So glad to have you here!”
“Hi, Aunt! I’m Claire Hopkins!”
“Aunt, you’re so beautiful! I’m abroad and couldn’t make it to the wedding, but here’s a gift for you!”
Before I could react, I received a transfer of twenty thousand dollars.
Then the floodgates opened, and a chain of money transfers started rolling in like a game of tag.
I stared at the screen, utterly stunned.
Sigmund leaned over and said casually, “Accept them. These are your welcome gifts.”
Still stunned, I hesitated. “Some of these transfers are forty, even sixty thousand dollars. Are you sure it’s okay for me to accept this?”
“Of course it’s fine. These are just small gestures. Since many of them couldn’t make it today, they’ll bring gifts the next time we meet. Even if they can’t be there in person they still need to give you something–that’s the rule.”
Since that was the case, I didn’t hold back.
As a gesture of goodwill, I sent out digital gift cards totaling over two thousand dollars for the younger family members to enjoy.
Even Liam’s family joined in, with Jasmine reluctantly sending me sixty thousand dollars.

But then it dawned on me–Sigmund and I hadn’t even registered our marriage yet. Would I need to return all of this someday?
Just from one meal, I had received over six hundred to eight hundred thousand dollars in gifts.
When I was with Liam, he gave me presents too. But I always made sure to give back equally, never letting him feel shortchanged.
Our family background couldn’t compare to the Hopkins family, but while I was with Liam, I never once thought about taking advantage of him.
At that moment, a new message popped up on my phone from Liam.
“Diana, do you really have to do this? I only spoke a few words to her. It was a matter of life and death, and yet you chose my uncle. I can’t believe you’d settle for just anyone!
Anger surged through me. I immediately replied, “Is that how you speak to your elders? Liam, are you looking to get yourself punished again?”
After sending the message, I took a screenshot and shoved my phone in front of Sigmund. “Take a look at what your dear nephew just said to me. Oh, and by the way, I need to head to my ex’s marital home to gather my things today.”
Sigmund glanced at me, nodded silently, and told the driver to head to the house.
When we arrived, Sigmund took one look at the decor of the marital home and raised an eyebrow. “So, this is what you like?”
“What?”
He gestured to the floral curtains and various stuffed animals scattered around. I smiled. “Yes, I love it.”
Everything in that marital home had been decorated by me, with painstaking effort. From the overall interior design to the smallest details like coasters, every single item had been chosen with care.
I loved the process of creating a cozy home, but Liam had never been involved. Not once.
