The way she bit out “sister–in–law” was practically dripping with venom, and I could see the hate burning in her eyes. But I didn’t care. I wanted her to hate me and be powerless to do anything about it.
Even Mary had made it clear: the Hopkins family now relied on Sigmund, and as his wife, I held a position of influence.
We hadn’t even agreed on the ground rules yet, but I already knew I could whisper sweet nothings in Sigmund’s ear and sway his decisions if I wanted to.
The thought put me in an excellent mood, and I enjoyed the rest of the meal immensely.

“What’s this? A family group chat? Why am I in your family chat?”
He tapped my forehead lightly. “Not your family. It’s our family.”
I hadn’t fully processed what he meant when the group chat exploded with excitement.
“Welcome, Aunt! So glad to have you here!”
“Hi, Aunt! I’m Claire Hopkins!”
“Aunt, you’re so beautiful! I’m abroad and couldn’t make it to the wedding, but here’s a gift for you!”
