Benjamin had provided the police with clues this whole time and was ultimately sentenced to three years in prison.
Gwen sighed when she finished recounting everything to me. Then, she said grimly, “This is why we can’t do immoral things. What goes around will always come around.”
I smiled and tried a bite of a mousse cake. “Uh–huh.”
When she saw how calm I was, she said, “You have no idea how frantic Benjamin was when looking for you that day. He asked everyone who knew you for your whereabouts, and his hair turned gray overnight when he learned you’d gone to the South Isles.
“Honestly, why are all scumbags like that? They don’t appreciate a good thing when they have it. They only regret the things they’ve done once they’ve been dumped.”
I nodded and smiled icily. “Maybe they’re just pathetic like that. You don’t have to tell me about him in the future, though. I don’t want him to dirty my ears.”

Chapter 8
Benjamin had been Mom’s student in the past. He’d come from a poor family but had outstanding grades. He’d also been talented in calligraphy.
Mom was the prized apprentice to a master in calligraphy. She’d seen Benjamin in action during a calligraphy competition and was impressed by his talent, so she’d taken him as her apprentice. She’d even sponsored him until he’d graduated high school.
At the time, Benjamin was the best–looking guy in school and also had the best grades. I’d had a huge crush on him, and he’d cared for me.
He knew about Lisa wrecking Mom and Dad’s marriage and had been indignant on my behalf. He’d also told Jennifer off whenever she bullied me.
However, his partiality for me had disappeared after he and Jennifer had attended a summer camp together. I was also supposed to attend but had to be hospitalized after getting a high fever due to a sudden allergy. The summer camp was over after a month, and I happily went to the airport to pick Benjamin up.
That was when I saw the hatred and contempt in his eyes as he looked at Mom and me. Jennifer looked at us smugly as he took his jacket off and wrapped it around her shoulders. He said in concern, “Take care of yourself, Jennifer. Don’t be scared of anything—I’ll be there for you.
His words had shattered my heart and hopes.
