He pressed the answer button, switching on the speakerphone. Zara’s drunken voice came through the phone

Dr. Gunn, it’s my fault that your family’s gathering ended badly today. Please don’t hate me. I’m someone who’s lucky just to

see another day. Meeting you was my biggest blessing. Can you not take away my last shot at happiness?”

Jason’s voice was low and firm. My wife and I need to rest. If there’s nothing important, don’t call me again.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of glass shattering

Zara’s voice came back, weak and frail. Alright, I’ll do as you say. I like places where I can see the flowers bloom in spring

somewhere facing the ocean. I’m an orphan, so I hope you can take care of my funeral matters.”

let her die.”

I sat up and looked him in the eyes, holding his gaze for what felt like an eternity. Then I gave him a soft smile. I just showered

so I’m not going out now. You go. I’ll leave the door unlocked for you.”

His eyes lit up. Overcome with joy, he hugged me tightly, as though he wanted to press me into his very bones

Honey, wait for me. I have so much to tell you when I get back.”

I didn’t reject the hug
