twisted
in his chest.
Only now did he know I was telling the truth about my injury. His hand shaking, he dialed my number.
I was sitting on my couch, looking at his caller ID with mixed feelings.
Serena had texted me at the same time. [What did you do to Cyrus this time, Marilyn? Why is he ignoring me?]
I blocked Cyrus and replied to Serena. [Why is it my fault? He dumped me after six years, so who’s to say he wouldn’t give up on a homewrecker like you?]
With that, I blocked her too. I did not want anything to do with those two anymore.
Anthony could tell I was feeling down, so he comforted me. “There’s a networking event next week. Why don’t you go with me?”

“Yes, and a lot of companies in our field will be there. You can use the chance to increase your network,” Anthony explained.
“Sounds good.” I nodded.
I knew that my new life had already begun. This time, I would be happier.

My feet were instantly frozen to the ground, unable to move.
Anthony held my arm and pulled me forward, whispering into my ear, “If you don’t cast away the shadows of your past
completely, they’ll just come back to haunt you later.”
I turned and met his gaze. His eyes were firm and warm, giving me strength.
I took a deep breath and squeezed his arm with a smile. “Do I look good like this? Can you tell I’ve started over with a fresh
slate?”
Anthony smiled and gave me a thumbs–up.
