I washed up and lay in bed, getting ready to sleep the night away. As soon as I closed my eyes, though, my phone rang.
I picked it up. The caller was Cyrus.
“Marilyn, what the hell are you doing? Why did you block me on Instagram?” Cyrus sounded curious.
“Because I’ve had enough of you and Serena.” My voice was determined. “It’s over between us, so don’t bother me anymore.”
“Stop making a fuss over nothing! Serena and I are just friends.” Cyrus was still full of excuses.
I scoffed. “Then tell me, why is she sleeping over in your room? Why is she lying on your bed, wearing your pajamas?”
“How did you know that? I can explain!” Cyrus started to sound panicky.
“No need to explain,” I interrupted him. “Serena just sent me pictures of the two of you together.”
I took a screenshot of the pictures Serena sent me and forwarded them to Cyrus. She had been bombarding me with gloating
pictures since that afternoon.

[I just sent one text, and Cyrus was beside himself with worry! He canceled his wedding with you a second time because of me. Isn’t it obvious who matters more to him?]
In other words, she was not sick at all. Cyrus had been lying to me the entire time.
Cyrus was silent for a second after seeing the pictures, then he said, “Marilyn, it’s not what you think it is.”
“Then what is it? Go on, tell me,” I demanded. “Stop the bald–faced lies, Cyrus. The more you try to explain, the more I look down on you.”
His voice sounded choked. “I was wrong, I know. Can you give me another chance?”
“Never,” I said coldly and hung up.
After that, I took a deep breath and tossed my phone aside. I closed my eyes, but the tears would not stop.
I knew that was the end of my relationship. From now on, I had to live for myself.
I would be lying if I said I could let go of a six–year relationship so easily. Still, no matter how hard it was, I was determined to let
- go.
