Edward was in a much better mood. He even crossed his legs leisurely while sipping his coffee in the office. At exactly 5:30 pm, he got up, grabbed his coat, and clocked out to have dinner with Sharon.
As soon as he started the car, his phone rang. He took it out glanced at the screen, and then laughed coldly before hanging up and putting it back in his pocket.
“Weren’t you cursing me out just this afternoon? I called 100 times, and you ignored me. Now that you need something, you’re calling me?” Edward sneered, stepping on the gas and driving off.
He could already guess why Macle was calling. He figured that it was probably about money for her hospital stay. After all, where else would she get the money when she hadn’t worked in the past two years?
Thinking about all the times he’d put up with her and all the kindness that went unappreciated, he gripped the steering wheel tighter. Just the night before, she had splashed water on him and gone crazy, hitting him with a toilet brush. His foot pressed harder on the accelerator.
About ten minutes into the drive, halfway to his destination, he stopped at a red light and opened the car’s call log.
There was no second call from Macie.
“Let’s see who else you can turn to for money.” Edward scoffed.
He continued driving. When he arrived at an intersection another ten minutes later, he could feel the irritation well up in him. He suddenly changed direction and set the GPS for the hospital.
Before long, an incoming call lit up his screen. Edward smirked and answered via Bluetooth.
“Ed, are you off work?” Sharon’s voice chimed in. “I’m already at the restaurant waiting for you.”
The smirk on Edward’s lips slowly faded. He replied, “Traffic is bad. Wait for me.”
“Okay. I’ll be waiting!” Sharon purred sweetly before hanging up.
Sitting in the car, Edward hesitated for a few seconds, debating whether to return the missed call from ago. But after a brief moment of indecision, he let his Al assistant send a text instead.
20 minutes
Edward smirked again when he heard the near–instant reply. It was just as he expected. Macie was waiting for him to give her a way out.
“Read me Macie’s reply,” Edward instructed the Al assistant.
“Okay. Here is the response from contact Macie: ‘Never mind.” The AI’s voice echoed through the car.
Edward was momentarily stunned and confused. That was it? Where was the rest of the message?
He repeated the command, but the result was the same. Frowning, he glanced at the central screen. When he read the two–worded reply, he was so angry that he made the car swerve slightly.
“You call that driving? Are you drunk? Even if you’re driving a Rolls–Royce, you still have to follow the law!” a nearby driver cursed at him.
Ignoring the man, Edward pulled over to the side and immediately called Macie.
“What is the meaning of this? You call me, then tell me ‘never mind‘? Are you messing with me?” Edward snapped.
Would it kill her to add another word to her reply? And that tone of hers! She hurt Sharon first, yet she had the

nerve to act high and mighty after everything.
“Never mind‘ because someone already sent it over. You don’t have to make the trip,” Macie replied coldly. ” Sorry for wasting your time. I shouldn’t have called you.‘

Edward’s temper flared at Macie’s words.
She was essentially saying that she shouldn’t have called him. He wondered who else she was planning to call if not him. If he wasn’t her first choice, then who the hell was
“Deliver what? Who sent it to you?” he demanded.
