Chapter 31
“People might think I have an unprofessional assistant otherwise,” Edward said.
Being a mere employee, Nathan didn’t dare argue and could only complain Inwardly, “Don’t you think that explanation makes it even more suspicious?”
As the car moved steadily forward, Macle turned her head to look out the window, avoiding any questions about how Edward knew her discharge time or why he had come to pick her up.
The reason was nothing more than to “shut her up“-to prevent her from speaking carelessly in front of Yosef.
It could also be because he had a shred of lingering conscience. After all, he was the one who caused her fractures.
In the back seat, Edward remained silent, his gaze shifting from the back of her head to her foot.
The blister marks had faded, leaving only faint red traces, Macie was walking fine now, and her complexion looked rosier than before.
It seemed like the nutritional meals hadn’t been a waste.
Edward smiled at the thought of it.
Macie might be giving him the cold shoulder, but in reality, she still accepted whatever he sent–whether it was the phone or the meal plan.
Yet, she hadn’t even said a simple “thank you“.
His smirk faded as frustration crept in.
Still, since her injuries were partly his fault, he chose not to dwell on it.
When they arrived at her apartment complex, Macie assumed that Edward would simply drop her off at the
entrance and leave. It was a workday, after all. But unexpectedly, he grabbed her bag and stepped out of the ca
“I can head up by myself,” Macie said coolly.
Edward didn’t respond immediately. As he swiped his access card at the entrance, he finally turned back, looking slightly awkward. “Don’t think that I’m doing this voluntarily. I just don’t want Grandpa nagging me.”
Macie followed him inside, unfazed. She didn’t notice the subtle shift in his expression.
Naturally, she knew that Edward wasn’t suddenly being considerate. She wouldn’t flatter herself with such thoughts.
Behind them, Nathan observed his boss‘ stubborn and proud behavior. Just last night, Edward had told Nathan to pick up Macie from the hospital that day.
He inwardly sighed.
He believed that a man who refused to communicate would only end up with regrets someday.
The three of them entered the elevator. As they reached the apartment door and Edward entered the passcode, a female voice rang out from inside when the door opened.
“Ed, did you forget something?”
Edward froze for a split second. While he instinctively wanted to glance back at Macie, he still stepped in without hesitation.

After all, he had already told her before that just because she didn’t reply didn’t mean that she didn’t see it.
Macie’s gaze lowered slightly. She wasn’t surprised at all to hear Sharon’s voice.
Nathan, on the other hand, discreetly studied Macie’s reaction and followed behind them.
“May, you’re finally out of the hospital!” Sharon paused before beaming upon seeing Macie behind Edward.” Come on in! You must’ve suffered while hospitalized. Have a seat and rest. I’ll get you some water.”
Sharon bustled around warmly, grabbing a cup and heading to the water dispenser.
Nathan’s expression became indescribable. Inwardly, he scoffed. He thought, “Talk about shameless. If someone didn’t know any better, they’d think that the mistress was the rightful owner here.
Macie didn’t sit down. Instead, she walked straight to her bedroom–only to halt when she found the door open.
She stared inside.
The layout, the furniture–everything had been changed. This was no longer her room.
“Oh dear, Ed didn’t tell you?” Sharon walked over, holding cup of water. “I moved in temporarily. Since I had a lot of stuff, I took your room. You don’t mind, do you?”
Macie clenched her fists and turned sharply to glare at Edward.
Edward stated, “Your room is bigger anyway. Let Sharon stay there. You can sleep in the smaller one.” He then added impatiently, “It’s just a room. Do you really have to look at me like that? You can move back in once Sharon
moves out.”
