Lama watched as Simon’s car pulled away. Remembering that he had left her behind for Hertha, she clenched her fists in
indignation. She was so angry that she gnashed her teeth together. She took her phone out again and sent another message to
Bertha.
[Bertha, if you know your place, leave Simon. He doesn’t need a deaf person as his wife.]
After that, she happily hummed and went upstairs to continue watching her show.
Simon sped back. Even though he got caught in the evening traffic, he still managed to reduce his trip to only forty minutes, when it was supposed to take one hour.
When he opened the door to his house, he could not find Bertha anywhere. In the end, he stopped in front of the bedroom door.
Assuming that she was sleeping inside, Simon took a deep breath before he opened the door to enter.
He removed his shoes and walked barefoot on the floorboards. Worried that he would wake her, he walked on tiptoes as he turned
on the flashlight app on his phone. But when he saw the empty bed, he noticed that there was no one in the bedroom. Their wedding photo was also gone from its spot above the bed. Only a pen drive and folder were left on the bed.
Curiosity made him pick up the pen drive and plug it into the computer. While he waited for the pen drive to load, he opened the
folder.
At the very top of the contents inside was a piece of paper, and on it were the words, “divorce agreement.” Simon was stunned for
few seconds. He read the agreement rapidly although his hands were trembling. Then, he saw a name he was intimately familiar with on the final page: Bertha Marsh
