Sitting on the edge of the bed, I felt as though I were trapped in a surreal dream. The room wasn’t excessively opulent, yet it radiated an extraordinary sense of warmth and comfort.
A housekeeper placed a neatly folded set of clothes beside the, smiling politely. “Miss Evelyn, these are pajamas Mr. Wynn selected for you. If they don’t fit, please let us know.”
I glanced at the soft pink sleepwear and quickly nodded. “Please thank Mr. Wynn for me.”
The housekeeper showed me how to use the bedside phone and the bathroom controls before leaving the room.
Just as I began to settle in, my phone buzzed.
It was Dolly,
“Why did it take you so long to answer? I was terrified something happened! Did Julian hurt you? And how’s your arm?” she demanded, her voice rising with worry.
I quickly recounted my trip to the hospital.
On the other end, Dolly went silent for a moment, then burst out, “Wait! Dr. Reed? That Michael Reed? The legendary orthopedic doctor?! And who’s the ridiculously handsome guy who saved you? He must have serious connections!”
I hesitated before answering, “He said his name is Miles Winn. He mentioned he’s a friend of my brother.”
“WHAT?!” Dolly shrieked so loudly that I had to pull the phone away from my ear. “Say that again–did you just say Miles Wynn? You’re not mistaken, right?”
I frowned at her reaction. “Yes, that’s his name, What’s wrong?”
There was a long pause, followed by Dolly practically hyperventilating. “Google him. Now, Immediately. I need you to confirm it.”
Curious and slightly alarmed, I opened my browser and typed in his name. The search results left me speechless.
I could barely catch my breath. “You mean this is the first result?”
“Exactly!” Dolly exclaimed, gasping like she’d just run a marathon. “And you’re staying on Horseshoe Bay Mountain, right?”
I nodded. “Yes, the view here is stunning. There aren’t any other houses around, though.
“Of course, there aren’t!” Dolly yelled. “That’s because the entire mountain and the surrounding ones belong to the Wynn family! They’ve owned the land for generations. Nobody else is allowed to build here!”
Her voice grew shrill with excitement. “Evelyn, do you understand? You’ve landed in the lap of the Wynn family! They’re not just rich–they’re the elite of the elite! Girl, you’ve hit the jackpot!!
Through her frantic explanation, it finally dawned on me just who Miles was.
In short, the Wynn family was the crème de la crème of high society.
The Wynn family’s roots in Riverdale traced back to Miles’s great–great–great–grandfather, who not only built a fortune but also established a sprawling, intricate business empire. Over generations, their wealth grew exponentially, thanks to strategic investments in almost every conceivable industry.
The scope of their holdings couldn’t be summed up by calling them a leader in one field–they had stakes in
countless sectors.
After decades of shrewd investments, nearly every major instry had companies with Wynn family shares, directly of through subsidiaries. The sheet number of profitable ventures they touched made their wealth impossible to quantify.
If Julian represented a breakout success as a business unicorn, Miles embodied the deep–rooted legacy of an old money dynasty. The contrast between the flash of new wealth and the understated, entrenched power of generations left no doubt about which held more sway.
I stammered, “But he doesn’t seem that extraordinary. Just a bit more composed than Julian. ”
Dolly sounded exasperated, practically yelling through the phone, “Evelyn, do you think your brother is impressive?”
