Chapter 16
When I brought up my brother, 1 felt a pang of sadness. “He’s Incredible. My brother has always been the pride of the White family.”
Dolly rudely interrupted me. “And what about Jultan? Do you think he’s impressive?”
The mere mention of Julian made me uncomfortable. “Can we not talk about him?”
Dolly softened her tone. “Fine, let’s stick to your brother. Your brother is considered a rising star in Riverdale’s business world, a prominent figure. Julian is barely catching up, but neither of them holds a candle to Miles!”
1 frowned. “That’s a bit much. My brother is remarkable; he’s no less capable than Miles,”
Dolly let out a scoff. “I never said your brother isn’t great. t the White family doesn’t have the deep foundations the Wynn family does. Look it up if you don’t believe me.
I fell silent. I was well aware of the White family’s standing It was indeed much smaller compared to the Wynns.
Dolly snorted again. “Forget it. You’re just a lovesick fool obsessed with Julian, blind to any other man. At least now, the fog in your brain is starting to clear. With Miles stepping in to help you, I think your luck’s about to turn.
Her laughter over the phone carried a mischievous edge. “If you manage to kick that scumbag Julian to the curb and turn your attention to Miles, maybe I’ll get to bask in some of that glory too.”
Heat crept up my ears. I quickly interrupted Dolly’s wild imagination. “Don’t overthink it. He’s only helping because of my brother. There’s nothing more to it.”
Dolly was about to say something else when a knock sounded at the door.
I quickly hung up the call and opened the door. Standing there was the same girl who had scolded me harshly at the front door earlier in the evening. Her face was just as sour as before.
She got straight to the point. “Evelyn White, you should leave. You’re not welcome here.”
I felt a headache coming on and sighed. “Miss Kira, I don’t even know you. Is it really necessary to target me like this?”
Kira stared at me with a peculiar expression, her tone laced with mockery. “Evelyn, I know you don’t know me, but surely you know Chloe Clarke?”
Chloe again?
I gave Kira a once–over and suddenly asked, “Is Chloe in the same field as you?”
Kira puffed out her chest with pride. “She’s my senior in the same discipline, exceptionally talented, and my mentor’s most prized student. Do you know why I hate you? Because of what you did to her. We all know about it.”
A surge of anger I couldn’t fully explain rose within me.
I had lost seven years of my memory and didn’t know what terrible thing I might have done to Chloe, but this constant feeling of being treated like a criminal everywhere I went was suffocating
My tone turned cold. “Whatever I did to Chloe is between her and me. What does it have to do with you, Miss Kira? Who are you to her anyway? Do you really think it’s your place to stand up for her?”
Kira hadn’t expected me to fight back, and her voice rose sharply. “Evelyn White, this is the Wynn estate. I’m telling you to get out. Did you hear me?”

Hotwords Infuriated me
I sneered. “Yes, this is the Wynn estate. But you’re not a member of the Wytin family. What gives you the right to tell me to leave? If anyone should ask me to leave, it should be Miles himself. Who are you to order me around?”
Kira glared at me, her eyes filled with ridicule. “Miles? Evelyn, I know you have no shame, but I didn’t realize your were this shameless. Miles? Do you even deserve to call him that? My cousin has only been back for three months, and this is the first time you’ve even met him. Don’t act like you’re so close.
I was furious and about to explain myself, but Kira didn’t give me the chance, pressing her advantage.
“You were a shameless homewrecker back in university! You knew full well fullan and Chloe were in a relationship, but you still went after him and destroyed what they had. Now that Julian doesn’t want you anymore, you’re trying to seduce my cousin instead!
“Evelyn, are you incapable of surviving without a man? Or are you just born this way–cheap and desperate, clinging to every man you see?”
Cheap, shameless…
Every vile insult I could imagine came pouring out of her mouth, relentless and cutting.
