If you don’t come back, there’s nothing left to discuss!”
I stared at my phone, which wouldn’t stop buzzing with no fications. Whatever patience I had left was completely drained.
Without hesitation, I blocked Jullan.
A moment later, as if realizing he’d been blocked on Whatsapp, he started calling me Instead. I didn’t even hesitate, and 1 blocked his number too.
Finally, there was blissful silence.
It felt like I could finally breathe again, a rush of relief wasing over me like I’d just shed a heavy weight.
I should have done this a long time ago.
I, Evelyn White, was never someone to be pushed around. Why had I tolerated Julian and his childhood sweetheart stomping all over me without fighting back?
The more I thought about it, the more I regretted not standing up for myself earlier. Why hadn’t I lost my i and put him in his place when I had the chance?
The door opened, and Miles walked in, bathed in the soft light of the afternoon.
I quickly tucked my phone away and gave him a cheerful smile. “Miles, I’m feeling much better now.”

He approached, studying my face carefully, then gave a slight nod. “You do look better. But you still need to see Dr. Reed this afternoon, along with a full check–up.”
I nodded obediently.
Though I wasn’t a fan of medical examinations, I knew this man genuinely cared about me.
I hesitated before asking cautiously, “What did my brother say to you last night?”
Miles paused, his hand still holding a glass of water. “He asked me to take good care of you. He can’t come back just yet.”
The flicker of disappointment was fleeting, but I understood that my brother couldn’t possibly throw everything aside for me.
Then Miles surprised me by asking, “What else do you remember?”
There was a deep, unreadable curiosity in his gaze that made me pause.
I thought for a moment and said, “I only remember things before I turned eighteen, up until the summer before my freshman year of college. After that, it’s all blank.”
He was silent for a while, then smiled faintly. “If you don’t remember, then let it be. It’s probably not that important.”
I gave a bitter smile. “How is it not important? That’s seven years of my life.”
Those lost seven years felt like a cruel joke as if fate had intentionally taken them away. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t recall even a fragment.
Waking up had felt like being thrust into a cliché romance novel as the villainous supporting character–forced into a turbulent marriage with a cold and domineering husband, while his unattainable childhood sweetheart

looned in the background. Their love story had turned my re into a ridiculous, chastle mess.
At that moment, Miles‘ phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen and casually declined the call.
The phone buzzed again, persistent.
I looked at himn, puzzled by his refusal to answet.
Once more, Miles dismissed the call without hesitation.
“It’s Julian,” he said, his tone light, as though commenting on the weather. “He seems a bit upset. Not quite the composed figure people make him out to be. I always thought someone like him would have no trouble managing his personal affairs, but… he’s proving father disappointi
His critique of Julian caught me off guard.
It finally clicked who was on the other end of the line.
But that realization only brought more confusion–when had Julian become so erratic? And why w
Miles, of all people?
Wasn’t he the one who despised me most, who couldn’t wait for me to disappear?
What on earth was he trying to achieve now?
I asked, “If it’s Julian calling, why don’t you answer?”
Miles countered with a question of his own. “Why should I?
And just like that, the conversation ended.
A nurse came in to replace the IV bag and brought me lunch
Miles, seeing that I was fine, left soon after.
He seemed incredibly busy, yet he always found time to check in on me, even if just briefly.
he calling
I realized how difficult he was to figure out. On the surface, he was approachable, down–to–earth even, but there was a distinct sense of distance he maintained from everyone.
I couldn’t quite read him.
The afternoon passed quickly. Joseph arrived, first asking about my condition before taking me to the hospital for further tests.
As promised, Michael was waiting for me there. He performed physical therapy, which eased the strain on my back and legs. Afterward, he applied a fresh ointment to my arm and gave me detailed care instructions.
I was well taken care of throughout the entire process.
Joseph stayed with me for every test, ensuring everything went smoothly.
But despite saying he’d come with me, Miles didn’t show up.
A faint sense of disappointment crept into my heart, though I quickly brushed it aside.
