Chapter 27
After I finished eating, Miles asked, “Want to go for a walk?
“Huh?”
I blinked at him, feeling like an idiot.
He gestured to my wrist, still wrapped with the IV port. “The doctor said you can move around a little. Just nothing too strenuous or tiring.”
That was when it clicked.
Miles came home specifically to keep an eye on me. He wasn’t avoiding work or choosing not to check his emails upstairs he was quietly staying by my side to help me receiver.
I nodded quickly.
Miles motioned for someone to bring out a pair of lightweight sneakers prepared for me. “Let’s go for a walk.”
Just as we were about to head out, loud voices came from the front door.
I heard someone say, “Miss Smith, Mr. Wynn is busy.”
Kira’s fiery tone followed. “I don’t care how busy he is, he has to see me! How long does he plan to keep me dumped in a hotel? I’m not staying there another night!”
“Miss Smith, please…”
Instinctively, I shrank back.
The last thing I wanted was another confrontation with Kir.
I valued my life, my health, and my peace of mind. Staying far away from people who hated me seemed like the
smartest move.
Miles noticed my hesitation and reassured me, “I’ll handle this. Wait in the living room, I’ll be back shortly.”
With that, he headed toward the commotion outside.
I sat in the living room for a bit, but curiosity got the better of me. Unable to resist, I quietly followed him to the door.
There, Kira stood disheveled, dragging a suitcase behind her. Her hair was a mess, and she looked utterly defeated.
I couldn’t help feeling a small thrill of satisfaction.
Sure, it wasn’t the most virtuous reaction but seeing her in such a state was oddly gratifying.
Miles‘ voice was calm but firm as he said, “Kira, I told you if you want to come back, you need to apologize to Eve. But even if you do, you still can’t stay here right now. Evelyn hasn’t fully recovered yet.”
I froze, shocked, and inwardly wiped a bead of sweat from my brow.
The way Miles defended me so openly and unapologetically–left me speechless. It made me want to cry.
Predictably, Kira lost her temper and started to spiral.
She screamed at the top of her lungs, “Miles! When did you get so close to that tramp? You’re calling her Eve? Seriously? Are you under some kind of spell? She’s a disgrace, a woman with a terrible reputation!”

Miles‘ voice remained cold and detached. “Kira, I don’t like repeating myself. Go back to the hotel.”
He turned on his heel, clearly ready to walk away.
But Kira wasn’t done. She clung to her tantrum like a lifeline. “Miles, I’m your cousin, not her! She’s just Nicholas
sister—she has nothing to do with youl I’ll tell Auntle you’re bullying mel
Then, as if to add to the drama, she burst into tears.
Miles stood in the night breeze, his presence like a stone fortress–aloof, cold, and untouchable,
“Kira Smith,” he said, his tone cutting through her walls like a blade. “You’re just my distant cousin. And frankly,
I don’t need another cousin. Having you or not makes no difference. As for my relationship with Eve, I’m very clear on that.”
Kira choked on a sob. “Then why are you protecting her? You’re kicking me out for an outsider?”
She grabbed at his sleeve, but Miles reacted as though he’d been touched by something filthy. He shook her hand off with lightning speed, his face twisting in irritation.
“Stop crying.”
For a second, even I thought he might be softening, about to offer some kind of comfort. Kira seemed to think so
too.
But then he added, and his words left her and me–utterly stunned.
“You’re making a scene, and it’s late. Your crying is going to scare Eve. Go back to the hotel.”
The air froze in silence.
Kira forgot to cry, and I forgot to revel in the schadenfreude
Miles frowned at the driver standing nervously nearby. “Take her back to the hotel. Don’t let her return unless it’s necessary.”
Kira completely broke down. “I’m not going back to the hotel! My mom said I could stay here, and I’m staying!”
Miles gave her a cold, cutting look. “Do what you want, then. But you’re not welcome here.”
