A well–meaning stranger had noticed me. He ran over in a panic, reaching out as if to stop me.
I blinked at him, momentarily stunned. I wanted to tell him I was just here for some fresh air, lost in thought.
This building wasn’t particularly tall, and there were people passing below. If I really wanted to jump, I would’ve chosen somewhere higher, somewhere more secluded. I wouldn’t want to trouble anyone with the aftermath.
The man kept pleading. “You’re so young. Whatever’s troubling you, you’ll get through it. Is it heartbreak? Bad grades?”

“Stop,” I cut him off.
“I don’t want to hear that. I just wanted to see the open sky. I sighed.

Before I knew it, someone had gone to fetch Fiona to talk me down. She rushed over, breathless, eyes brimming with tears the moment she saw me near the edge. “Jolene, don’t do this! Please don’t!”
I stared at her for a long moment, speechless.
Slowly, my thoughts cleared. The suffocating weight in my chest lifted bit by bit. My gaze steadied, and in my peripheral vision, I caught sight of the brilliant sunset burning across the sky.
I wasn’t going to die.
Even if I disappeared, they wouldn’t grieve. The only ones who would truly be hurt were the few who actually cared about me.
