Chapter 5 She Must Be Lying
After my mother heard the nurse’s words, I watched as she was bewildered for a moment. Then, she frowned and thought for a second before saying coldly, “That’s impossible. Alice was in the same car with her, and she was still the driver. Alice’s already been discharged, so how could she be dead? This must be her newest scheme.
“She’s grown more vicious over the years, even being able to curse her own children. This is just unbelievable.” She unconsciously kicked a piece of broken glass on the floor. “All she knows is to fight for attention. Now, even you guys are in this too.”
On the other end, the nurse sighed and said, “Dr. Miranda, why would I lie to you? Ms. Tyson’s body is still in the morgue. I’m calling to ask if you’d like to bring her home for burial. If you don’t believe me, come and see it for yourself.”
My mother grew anxious upon hearing her words. “How dare she still try to fool me? I bet you are helping her, too, huh? Just you wait. I’ll fire you tomorrow!” With that, she ended the call.
Then, the room fell silent, and my mother resumed her restless pacing. “She says Vanessa is dead. Could it be true?
My father frowned and raised his voice for the first time. “Just go and see for yourself! I told you before that we should have checked on her!”
Outside, Liam knocked on the door. “Mom, Dad? Alice and heard you guys were arguing. What’s going on?”
Mom hurriedly opened the door and looked at Liam with an uneasy expression. “The hospital just called and said that Vanessa is dead.”
Liam frowned as he recalled what had happened. “No way. Although I was focused on Alice at the time, I remember Vanessa grabbing my arm and talking with much strength. She didn’t seem seriously hurt at all.”
Sure enough, my mother seemed to have regained her confidence as she straightened up her back. Then, she looked at my father and said, “See? I told you! That girl is definitely faking this! She’s staging this with the hospital staff to deceive me!”
My father looked like he wanted to respond but held back under my mother’s fierce gaze.
“Don’t worry, Mom,” said Liam as he helped her to the living room. “Vanessa always exaggerates the smallest things to get our attention. She’s just jealous that you focus on Alice and think you favor her too much.”
“Mom,” Alice chimed hesitantly. She looked guilty as she spoke, “Do you think Vanessa is still mad at me for not driving well? It’s my fault. I’ll apologize to her if it helps.”
“Silly girl.” My mother caressed her cheeks adoringly. “You don’t need to apologize to her. Don’t worry. Tomorrow, I’ll go to the hospital and bring her back. She will apologize to you!”
