Sasha sighed, half amused and half exasperated, as she listened to Celia’s soft, even breathing

How tired do you have to be to fall asleep like this?she thought

With a quiet sigh, she shifted slightly, angling her body to shield Celia from view. The last thing she wanted was for someone else to notice her friend napping during the ceremony

The event dragged on as usual, with speeches from various administrators stretching far beyond their promised three key points,devolving into countless tangents. By the time the ceremony finally wrapped up, it was 7:30 a.m., and the campus was just starting to come alive

Celia, now fully awake after her stolen rest, tugged Sasha’s arm as they discussed breakfast plans

I swear, if I’d known being in the student council wouldn’t exempt us from these ceremonies in sophomore year, I never would’ve joined,Celia complained with a yawn, repeating the sentiment for what felt like the hundredth time

You’ve been saying that since our first ceremony in sophomore year. Please, spare my ears,Sasha groaned, her expression one of exaggerated suffering. Funny how you didn’t have this attitude when you were happily racking up student council credits.” 

Unlike Celia, who had napped through most of the speeches, Sasha had dutifully listened to every word of the administratorsdroning monologues

But at least this was the final ceremony of the semester. By the time the next one rolled around, they would be juniors and no longer responsible for these events

What do you feel like for breakfast?Celia grinned, quickly changing the subject. Linking arms with Sasha, she led the way to the cafeteria, neither of them noticing Lucas a few steps behind, quietly trailing their path. 

The cafeteria wasn’t crowded, giving Celia and Sasha plenty of time to browse the offerings. After wandering through the options, they both settled on a bowl of mushroom soup

The soup was piping hot, and the cafeteria staff, perhaps feeling generous toward the two petite girls, had filled their bowls to the 

brim. Carrying the steaming portions to a table suddenly felt like a balancing act

Carefully cradling her bowl, Celia moved with exaggerated caution, determined not to spill a drop. But despite her vigilance, she hadn’t accounted for the unpredictable

As she turned, her path crossed with that of a passing student, and before she could react, they collided
