Jane and Luther’s father, Seamus Spencer, had been high school sweethearts. They were renowned for being the perfect couple.
But in the video playing on the screen, the ever–devoted Seamus was seen holding a young woman in his arms. The woman was in her early 20s, and her smile bore an uncanny resemblance to a younger Jane.
Jane stormed into the living room and slapped Seamus across the face. Hers turned pale as tears streamed down her cheeks.
“How could you do this to me? Explain yourself!”
“Am I not doing what you’re doing? You brought Wren into our son’s life. At least I’m better than you–I’m not having a baby with her who’ll call you ‘Mom,“” Seamus retorted.
Seamus shoved Jane aside and walked out, leaving her trembling and crying.
“I’ve been with your father for 43 years! We’ve been married forever. What did I do wrong? Where is his conscience?” Jane wailed.
“And what about Callista? What did she do wrong?” Luther’s voice cut through her cries. His eyes were filled with fury.
い
Pain only became real when the knife was turned on oneself. His mother was learning that now, and so was he.
None of them deserved any relief from their torment.
Jane collapsed onto the couch. After a long silence, her gaze locked onto Wren, and she screamed, “Get out! All of you, get out!”
She hurled everything within reach at Wren. “You’re all the same. None of you are worth anything!”
Luther turned and walked away.
Wren followed as soon as he stepped outside. Her face was streaked with tears. “Luther, what about me and the baby? I’m so scared.”
Luther froze in his tracks. Wren had been wrong, but her sins weren’t unforgivable.
Not to mention, the child was innocent–a child he had looked forward to for over eight months.
“I’ll transfer some money to you. Take care of yourself,” he said flatly.
“No, I don’t want money!” Wren grabbed the hem of his shirt.
“I truly love you. Can’t you at least visit me and the baby sometimes?”
Just as Luther frowned and was about to refuse, his phone rang. It was a call from home.
“Mr. Spencer, Mrs. Spencer sent a package for you.”
Luther immediately froze, and his heart leapt with joy. He shook off Wren’s hand and raced to his car. He drove home as fast as he could.
Wren staggered behind him, barely keeping her balance. Nonetheless, her eyes were dark and venomous. She had worked so hard to drive Callista away. Why was she coming back now?
The 30–minute drive took Luther only 15. When he got out of the car, he tripped several times in his haste. There were smudges of dirt all over his clothes.
